Description
Algesal Local Analgesic Cream – 100g
Algesal Local Analgesic Cream is a topical pain-relieving cream used to help ease muscle aches, joint pain, rheumatic pain, and minor sports injuries. It is applied directly to the skin over the affected area to provide targeted, localised relief.
⸻
How It Works
Algesal contains diethylamine salicylate, which belongs to a group of medicines called salicylates — related to aspirin. When rubbed into the skin, it is absorbed into the tissue beneath, where it helps to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in muscles and joints. The cream also produces a mild warming sensation that can help to soothe discomfort in the affected area.
⸻
Directions for Use
For adults and children aged 12 years and over, apply a small amount of cream to the affected area and gently massage into the skin up to 3 times daily. Wash your hands after applying, unless the hands are the area being treated. Avoid applying to broken, irritated, or sensitive skin, and keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use under tight bandages or dressings. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Diethylamine salicylate 10% w/w
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Skin redness or irritation at the site of application
• Mild burning or stinging sensation on the skin
• Skin rash or itching
• Allergic skin reactions (such as contact dermatitis)
• Rarely, a more widespread allergic reaction may occur
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to diethylamine salicylate, aspirin, or other salicylates
• People who are allergic to any of the other ingredients in the cream
• Children under 12 years of age
• Anyone with broken, inflamed, or damaged skin at the application site
• People with a known sensitivity to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
⸻
Interactions
Because Algesal is applied to the skin and only small amounts are absorbed into the bloodstream, significant drug interactions are uncommon. However, if you are already taking oral salicylates or anticoagulants (blood-thinning medicines) such as warfarin, you should use this cream with caution, as some absorption through the skin may occur. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The use of salicylate-containing products during pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester, is generally not recommended, as salicylates may affect the baby. If you are breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid applying the cream to the chest area to prevent any possible contact with the baby. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known interaction between Algesal Local Analgesic Cream and alcohol. As this medicine is applied to the skin and not taken orally, alcohol is not expected to affect how it works or increase the risk of side effects.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Algesal Local Analgesic Cream is applied topically and is not expected to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you notice any unexpected symptoms that affect your alertness, avoid driving and speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Storage
