What is zopiclone?
Zopiclone is a sleeping tablet for short-term insomnia. Because it can cause dependence, it is only meant to be used for a short time.
Brands and strengths
Zopiclone is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic zopiclone and under brand names including Zimovane and Zileze — all contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:
- Zopiclone 3.75 mg tablets
- Zopiclone 7.5 mg tablets
- UK brands: Zimovane and Zileze

- Short-term insomnia
How to take zopiclone
Taken at bedtime, only for a short course (usually up to 2–4 weeks). Do not take it every night long-term, and do not stop suddenly after regular use without advice. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).
Side effects
Common effects include a bitter or metallic taste, daytime drowsiness and dry mouth. Do not drive if you feel drowsy the next day. This is not a full list — see the patient information leaflet (BNF).
