What is sertraline?
Sertraline is a type of antidepressant called an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). It is used to treat depression and anxiety, and can take a few weeks to build up its full effect.
Brands and strengths
Sertraline is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic sertraline and under the brand name Lustral — both contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:
- Sertraline 50 mg tablets

- Depression
- Anxiety disorders (incl. panic disorder, OCD, PTSD)
How to take sertraline
Usually taken once a day, with or without food. It can take 4–6 weeks to feel the full benefit — keep taking it and do not stop suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal effects. Speak to your prescriber before stopping. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).
Side effects
Common effects can include feeling sick, headache, trouble sleeping, dry mouth and diarrhoea, which often ease after the first weeks. Seek urgent advice if your mood worsens or you have thoughts of harming yourself. This is not a full list — see the patient information leaflet (BNF).
