What is amitriptyline?
Amitriptyline is used at low doses for nerve (neuropathic) pain and to help prevent migraine, and at higher doses for depression.
Brands and strengths
Amitriptyline is the name of the active ingredient. In the UK it is sold as generic amitriptyline and under the brand name Lentizol — both contain the same active ingredient and work the same way. Common strengths:

How to take amitriptyline
Usually taken once a day in the evening, as it can make you sleepy. It may take a few weeks to help with pain. Do not stop suddenly without advice. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions (BNF).
Side effects
