Description
Promethazine Hydrochloride 10mg – 56 Tablets
Promethazine Hydrochloride 10mg tablets are an antihistamine medicine used to relieve allergic conditions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and skin reactions, as well as to prevent and treat travel (motion) sickness, and to provide short-term relief of sleep difficulties.
⸻
How It Works
Promethazine works by blocking histamine receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural chemical released during allergic reactions that causes symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. By blocking histamine, promethazine reduces these symptoms. It also acts on parts of the brain involved in nausea and sleep, which is why it helps with travel sickness and sleeplessness.
⸻
Directions for Use
Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated. For allergies in adults and children aged 10 and over: 10mg to 20mg up to three times daily. For travel sickness in adults: 25mg taken the night before travel, or 25mg taken 1–2 hours before travel. For short-term insomnia in adults: 25mg taken at bedtime. Promethazine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Promethazine should be used with caution during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester and close to the time of delivery, as it may affect the newborn. It may pass into breast milk and could cause drowsiness in a breastfed baby. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking promethazine. Alcohol can significantly increase the sedative effects of this medicine, making drowsiness much worse and potentially dangerous. This is especially important if you need to drive or operate machinery.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Promethazine causes drowsiness and can significantly impair your ability to drive or use machinery. You should not drive, cycle, or operate machinery whilst taking this medicine until you know how it affects you. The sedative effects can last into the following day, particularly when used as a sleep aid.
