Description
Paracetamol 500mg Suppositories: 10 Pack
Paracetamol 500mg Suppositories are a rectal medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain — such as headaches, toothache, and muscle aches — and to reduce fever in adults and children aged 12 years and over. They are an ideal alternative for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules, or who are feeling nauseous.
⸻
How It Works
Paracetamol works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain called prostaglandins, which are responsible for sending pain signals and raising body temperature. By reducing these signals, paracetamol helps to ease pain and bring down a high temperature (fever). When given as a suppository, it is absorbed through the lining of the rectum directly into the bloodstream.
⸻
Directions for Use
Adults and children aged 12 years and over: Insert one or two suppositories (500mg–1000mg) rectally every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not use more than four doses (4000mg) in any 24-hour period. Leave at least 4 hours between doses. To insert, lie on your side, gently push the suppository into your rectum pointed end first, and try to remain lying down for a few minutes afterwards. Do not use for more than 3 days without seeking medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Paracetamol 500mg per suppository
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Paracetamol suppositories are generally well tolerated, but some people may experience:
• Mild irritation or discomfort in the rectum
• Skin redness or rash
• Low blood pressure (rare)
• Blood disorders such as thrombocytopaenia (very rare)
• Serious liver or kidney damage if the recommended dose is exceeded
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to paracetamol or any of the other ingredients
• People with severe liver disease or liver failure
• People with severe kidney disease
• Children under 12 years of age (this strength is not suitable)
• People who already take other paracetamol-containing products — this can lead to accidental overdose
⸻
Interactions
Paracetamol can interact with certain medicines, including warfarin and other anticoagulants (blood-thinning medicines), where regular use may increase the risk of bleeding. Medicines that affect how quickly the stomach empties — such as metoclopramide — may affect the speed of paracetamol absorption. Some medicines used to treat epilepsy (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital) and the antibiotic rifampicin may affect how paracetamol is processed by your body, potentially increasing the risk of liver damage. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Paracetamol has been used for many years during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is generally considered the first-choice painkiller for these groups when used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. However, recent guidance suggests using paracetamol only when necessary during pregnancy. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking paracetamol, particularly if you drink regularly or in large amounts, as this increases the risk of liver damage. Occasional, moderate alcohol consumption is unlikely to cause problems for most people, but it is best to check with your PillSorted pharmacist if you are unsure.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Paracetamol suppositories do not cause drowsiness and are not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you feel unwell due to the condition being treated, use your own judgement about whether it is safe to drive.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze, as this may affect the consistency of the suppositories. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
