Description
Glycerol 2g Suppositories 12 Pack (Brand May Vary)
Glycerol suppositories are a gentle and effective treatment for constipation. Each suppository contains 2g of glycerol (also known as glycerin), which works as an osmotic laxative to provide relief from constipation within 15-60 minutes. These suppositories are particularly useful when other laxatives are not suitable or when rapid relief is needed. This pack contains 12 suppositories, providing convenient and reliable constipation relief for adults and children over 12 years.
How It Works
Glycerol suppositories work as osmotic laxatives. When inserted into the rectum, glycerol draws water into the bowel through osmosis, which softens the stool and stimulates the natural urge to have a bowel movement. The suppository also has a mild lubricating effect, making it easier for stools to pass. This dual action provides gentle yet effective relief from constipation, typically working within 15 to 60 minutes of insertion.
Directions for Use
Adults and children over 12 years: Insert one suppository into the rectum when required. Do not use more than one suppository in 24 hours unless advised by your pharmacist or doctor.
How to use:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after use
- Remove the suppository from its wrapper
- Lie on your side with knees drawn up towards your chest
- Gently insert the suppository pointed end first into the rectum, pushing it in about 2cm
- Remain lying down for a few minutes to allow the suppository to dissolve
- The urge to empty your bowels should occur within 15-60 minutes
If you have not had a bowel movement within 60 minutes, or if constipation persists after several days of use, consult your pharmacist or doctor.
Active Ingredients
Each suppository contains:
- Glycerol 2g (the active ingredient)
The suppository base typically contains gelatin and other inactive ingredients that help form the suppository and aid dissolution.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, glycerol suppositories can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most side effects are mild and temporary.
Common side effects may include:
- Mild rectal irritation or discomfort
- Abdominal cramps or griping
- Rectal burning sensation
- Urgent need to empty bowels
These effects are usually mild and short-lived. If side effects persist or become troublesome, stop using the suppositories and consult your pharmacist or doctor.
