Gaviscon Double Action Liquid Peppermint is an antacid and alginate medicine used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and the discomfort caused by gastro-oesophageal reflux — including the burning sensation and regurgitation of stomach acid.

How It Works

Gaviscon Double Action works in two ways: the antacid components (sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate) neutralise excess stomach acid to provide fast relief, while sodium alginate forms a soothing, gel-like raft that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent acid from rising back up into the oesophagus (food pipe).

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: Take 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoons) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Do not exceed 80 ml in any 24-hour period. This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless directed by a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use.

• Sodium bicarbonate 133.5 mg per 10 ml dose
• Calcium carbonate 160 mg per 10 ml dose

Possible Side Effects

• Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing — seek immediate help if this occurs)
• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Flatulence (wind)
• Stomach discomfort

Who Should Not Use This Product

• Children under 12 years of age (unless advised by a doctor)
• People with a known allergy to any of the ingredients
• People who have been told to follow a low-sodium (low-salt) diet, as this product contains sodium
• People with hypercalcaemia (high calcium levels in the blood) or conditions requiring a low-calcium diet
• People with kidney problems should seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist before use

Storage

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, use within 28 days. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
