    Description

Gaviscon Advance Liquid Aniseed – 500ml

Gaviscon Advance Liquid Aniseed is a pharmacy medicine used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over.

    How It Works

Gaviscon Advance contains sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate, which work together in your stomach to form a thick, gel-like raft on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid from rising up into the food pipe (oesophagus), which is what causes the burning sensation of heartburn and acid reflux.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 5–10 ml (1–2 teaspoons) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. The suspension should be taken after eating and not before. Do not exceed 40 ml in 24 hours. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Sodium alginate 500 mg per 5 ml
    • Potassium bicarbonate 100 mg per 5 ml

    Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Advance is generally well tolerated. Known side effects are uncommon but may include:
    • Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or swelling
    • Stomach bloating or flatulence (wind)
    • Nausea
    • Changes in bowel habits
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take Gaviscon Advance Liquid Aniseed if you:
    • Are allergic to sodium alginate, potassium bicarbonate, or any other ingredient in the product
    • Have been told to follow a low-potassium (low-potassium) diet
    • Are on a strictly controlled low-sodium diet (each 10 ml dose contains approximately 106 mg of sodium)
    • Are under 12 years of age
    • Have kidney problems that require you to limit potassium intake — seek medical advice first

    Interactions

Gaviscon Advance may affect the absorption of some other medicines if taken at the same time. It is advisable to leave at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon Advance and any other oral medicines. There are no known significant interactions with food. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Advance is generally considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed, and is commonly recommended for pregnancy-related heartburn. However, as it contains potassium bicarbonate and a relatively high sodium content, it is important to use it under guidance during pregnancy. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known interaction between Gaviscon Advance and alcohol. However, alcohol can itself worsen the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to avoid or limit alcohol consumption when suffering from these conditions.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Advance Liquid Aniseed is not known to cause drowsiness or affect concentration. It is not expected to impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

    Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, use within 1 month. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
