    Description

    Dulcolax 10mg – 12 Suppositories

Dulcolax 10mg Suppositories are used to relieve constipation or to help clear the bowel before a medical procedure or examination. Each suppository contains bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative that works directly in the rectum to produce a bowel movement quickly and effectively.

    How It Works

Bisacodyl works by stimulating the muscles in the wall of the bowel, encouraging them to contract and move stools along. It also helps to soften the stool by drawing water into the bowel, making it easier to pass. When inserted as a suppository, it acts locally in the rectum and typically produces a bowel movement within 10 to 30 minutes.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 10 years and over should use one suppository (10mg) once daily. Remove the suppository from its wrapper and, lying on your side, gently insert it into the rectum as far as is comfortable. Try to retain it for as long as possible before the urge to use the toilet becomes too strong. Children under 10 years should not use this product unless directed by a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Bisacodyl 10mg per suppository

    Possible Side Effects

    • Abdominal discomfort or cramps
    • Feeling of rectal irritation or burning
    • Diarrhoea
    • Nausea
    • Feeling of urgency to use the toilet
    • With prolonged use: electrolyte imbalance or low potassium levels

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People who are allergic to bisacodyl or any other ingredient in this product
    • People with a blocked or inflamed bowel (intestinal obstruction or ileus)
    • People with severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting of unknown cause
    • People with inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (unless advised by a doctor)
    • Children under 10 years of age
    • People with anal fissures or haemorrhoids (unless directed by a doctor)

    Interactions

Using Dulcolax suppositories at the same time as diuretics (water tablets) or corticosteroids may increase the risk of low potassium levels in the blood. Overuse of stimulant laxatives in general may affect how other medicines are absorbed from the gut. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Bisacodyl suppositories are not generally recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, as stimulant laxatives may cause uterine contractions. There is limited information on the use of bisacodyl during breastfeeding, although the amount absorbed from suppositories is very small. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between bisacodyl suppositories and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation, so it is advisable to drink plenty of water and limit alcohol intake when treating constipation.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Dulcolax suppositories are not known to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, because they can produce a rapid urge to use the toilet, it is advisable to use them at a time when you can remain close to a toilet for at least 30 minutes after insertion.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate or freeze the suppositories, as this may affect their consistency. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
