Bonjela Adult Gel is a soothing mouth gel used to relieve pain and discomfort caused by mouth ulcers, cold sores, sore spots, and irritation from dentures. It is suitable for adults and young people aged 16 and over.

How It Works

Bonjela Adult Gel contains two active ingredients that work together to relieve mouth pain. Choline salicylate acts as a mild painkiller and anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce soreness and swelling in the affected area. Cetalkonium chloride is an antiseptic that helps fight bacteria and may assist with healing.

Directions for Use

Adults and young people aged 16 and over: apply a small amount of gel (approximately 1 cm) to the affected area using a clean fingertip. Gently massage in with a circular motion. Repeat every 3 hours as needed, but do not use more than 6 times in 24 hours. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after applying. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Possible Side Effects

• Mild stinging or burning sensation at the application site
• Local irritation or redness in the mouth
• Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or itching (rare)
• Hypersensitivity reactions in people sensitive to salicylates (rare)

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• Children and young people under 16 years of age
• Anyone with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to choline salicylate, cetalkonium chloride, or any other ingredient in the gel
• People with an allergy to aspirin or other salicylates
• People with chickenpox or flu-like symptoms (risk of Reye’s syndrome with salicylate-containing products in under 16s — hence the age restriction)

Interactions

Bonjela Adult Gel is applied locally in the mouth and is unlikely to cause significant interactions with other medicines when used as directed. However, choline salicylate is related to aspirin, so caution may be warranted if you are taking other salicylate-containing medicines or anticoagulants such as warfarin. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The safety of Bonjela Adult Gel during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established. As the gel contains choline salicylate (related to aspirin), it is advisable to avoid use during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, unless directed by a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There are no known significant interactions between Bonjela Adult Gel and alcohol when the gel is used as directed. However, alcohol may further irritate mouth ulcers or sore areas, so it is advisable to avoid alcohol shortly after applying the gel.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Bonjela Adult Gel is applied locally in the mouth and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. It does not cause drowsiness.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
