    What’s in This Pack

    • 3 x Emla Cream 5% – 5g
    • Identical to the single tube — same manufacturer, same product

    How It Works

Emla Cream contains two local anaesthetics — lidocaine and prilocaine — which work together to temporarily block the nerve signals in the skin. This numbing effect reduces the sensation of pain in the area where the cream is applied, making procedures more comfortable. The cream needs to be applied under an occlusive dressing for a set period of time before the procedure to allow it to work effectively.

    Directions for Use

For adults and children aged 1 year and over, apply a thick layer of cream (approximately 1.5–2g per 10cm² of skin) to the area to be treated and cover with the occlusive dressing provided. Leave in place for at least 1 hour before a minor procedure, or up to 5 hours for deeper procedures. Remove the cream just before the procedure begins. Do not apply to broken or inflamed skin, or near the eyes. Specific dosing guidance differs for infants and younger children — refer to the patient information leaflet for full details. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Lidocaine 25mg per gram (2.5%)
    • Prilocaine 25mg per gram (2.5%)

    Possible Side Effects

    • Temporary paleness (blanching) of the skin at the application site
    • Redness or flushing of the skin
    • Mild swelling or oedema at the application site
    • Itching or burning sensation
    • Skin rash or allergic reaction (uncommon)
    • Methaemoglobinaemia (a rare blood condition — more likely if used on large areas or in young infants)
“If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.”

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People who are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, or any other local anaesthetic of the amide type
    • People who are allergic to any other ingredient in the cream
    • Infants under 1 year of age taking medicines that cause methaemoglobinaemia (e.g., sulphonamides)
    • Do not apply to the eyes, ear drum, or open wounds
    • Not recommended for use on mucous membranes without specific medical advice

    Interactions

Emla Cream may interact with other local anaesthetics if used at the same time, potentially increasing the risk of side effects. Medicines that can cause methaemoglobinaemia — such as sulphonamides, dapsone, antimalarials, or certain other drugs — may increase the risk of this rare side effect, particularly in young children. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Emla Cream is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed and on small areas of skin for short periods. However, it should be used with caution, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known interaction between Emla Cream and alcohol when used topically as directed. However, drinking alcohol before a medical procedure may not be advisable — speak to your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Emla Cream is applied to the skin and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. The amount absorbed into the bloodstream from normal topical use is very small. If you feel unwell after using this product, do not drive and seek medical advice.

    Storage

Store Emla Cream below 30°C. Do not freeze the product. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
