    Description

Senokot Syrup Constipation Relief – 500ml

Senokot Syrup is a gentle laxative used to relieve constipation in adults and children. It contains senna, a naturally derived herbal active ingredient, and comes in a convenient 500ml bottle that is easy to measure and take.

    How It Works

Senna works by stimulating the natural muscle movements in your large intestine, helping to move stools along and encouraging a bowel movement. It typically takes 8 to 12 hours to work, so it is often best taken at night to produce an effect the following morning.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 10ml to 20ml (2 to 4 teaspoons) at night. Children aged 6 to 12 years: take 5ml to 10ml at night. Children under 6 years should not take this product unless directed by a doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and avoid using for more than a few days at a time without medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Senna (as sennoside B) 7.5mg per 5ml

    Possible Side Effects

    • Abdominal cramps or discomfort
    • Diarrhoea
    • Nausea
    • Discolouration of the urine (harmless)
    • Skin reactions such as rash or itching (rare)
    • Prolonged use may lead to a dependence on laxatives or an imbalance in body salts (electrolytes)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • Children under 6 years of age
    • People with a known allergy to senna or any other ingredient in this product
    • People with intestinal blockage (ileus) or severe abdominal pain of unknown cause
    • People with inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (unless advised by a doctor)
    • People with appendicitis or acute inflammatory conditions of the abdomen
    • People who are severely dehydrated or have a condition causing low electrolyte levels

    Interactions

Senna may interact with certain heart medicines such as digoxin, as laxative-induced electrolyte imbalances can affect how these drugs work. Prolonged use alongside diuretics (water tablets) or corticosteroids may increase the risk of low potassium levels. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Senna is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy and should only be used in later pregnancy if clearly necessary and under medical guidance. Small amounts of senna metabolites may pass into breast milk. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between senna and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation, so it is advisable to keep well hydrated while taking this product.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Senokot Syrup does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience unexpected dizziness or feel unwell after taking this product, you should not drive.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
