Voltarol Back & Muscle 1.16% Gel is a topical anti-inflammatory gel used to relieve localised pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with back pain, muscle aches, sprains, strains, and sports injuries. It contains diclofenac diethylammonium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), applied directly to the skin for targeted relief.

How It Works

Diclofenac works by blocking the production of prostaglandins — natural chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. Because the gel is applied directly to the affected area, the active ingredient is absorbed through the skin to work at the site of pain, while minimising the amount entering the bloodstream compared to oral anti-inflammatory tablets.

Directions for Use

For adults and young people aged 14 years and over, apply 2–4g of gel (roughly a 2–4cm strip) to the affected area three to four times daily. Gently rub the gel into the skin until it has been absorbed. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are the area being treated. Do not apply to broken, damaged, or infected skin, and avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes. Do not use for more than 7 days without seeking medical advice. Possible Side Effects

Common side effects at the site of application may include:
• Skin redness or rash
• Itching or burning sensation
• Dry or flaking skin
• Mild swelling at the application site
• Dermatitis (skin inflammation)
• Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight at the treated area)

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not use this product if you:
• Are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other NSAID
• Have ever had an allergic reaction (such as asthma, hives, or rash) after taking an NSAID
• Are in the last three months (third trimester) of pregnancy
• Are under 14 years of age
• Have known hypersensitivity to any of the excipients in the gel
• Have open wounds, broken skin, or active skin conditions at the site of application

Interactions

Because Voltarol Back & Muscle Gel is applied topically, the risk of interactions with other medicines is lower than with oral NSAIDs. However, caution is advised if you are also using other topical or oral NSAIDs, anticoagulants (blood thinners such as warfarin), or other medicines that may interact with diclofenac. Avoid using other topical preparations on the same area of skin at the same time. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Voltarol Back & Muscle Gel should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy, as NSAIDs may harm the unborn baby. Use during the first and second trimesters should be avoided unless considered essential by a doctor, and treatment should be kept to the shortest duration possible. The gel is not recommended during breastfeeding as diclofenac may pass into breast milk. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no specific interaction between topical diclofenac gel and alcohol, as only a small amount of the active ingredient is absorbed into the bloodstream. However, if you have any concerns, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist for personalised advice.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Voltarol Back & Muscle 1.16% Gel is applied topically and is not known to cause drowsiness or to impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. It is considered safe to drive whilst using this product as directed.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
