Simple Linctus is a gentle, soothing cough medicine designed to provide relief from dry, tickly, and irritating coughs. This traditional demulcent preparation helps to coat and soothe the throat, reducing the urge to cough and providing comfort when you’re suffering from a persistent dry cough. Simple Linctus is suitable for adults and children and offers a tried-and-tested approach to managing troublesome coughs without the need for stronger medications.
How It Works
Simple Linctus works as a demulcent, which means it forms a protective, soothing layer over the irritated tissues in your throat and respiratory tract. The syrupy consistency helps to coat the throat, reducing irritation and suppressing the cough reflex. The citric acid provides a mild acidic environment that can help reduce throat irritation, whilst the syrup base provides the coating action that soothes inflamed tissues and reduces the tickling sensation that triggers dry coughs.
Directions for Use
Adults and children over 12 years: Take 5ml (one teaspoon) three to four times daily as required.
Children 5-12 years: Take 2.5ml (half a teaspoon) three to four times daily as required.
Children 1-5 years: Take 2.5ml (half a teaspoon) three times daily as required.
Do not exceed the stated dose. If symptoms persist for more than one week, consult your pharmacist or doctor. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided, or use a 5ml medicine spoon available from your pharmacist. Take straight from the spoon – do not dilute with water.
Active Ingredients
Each 5ml contains:
- Citric acid monohydrate 125mg
Also contains: sucrose, water, and may contain other inactive ingredients depending on the manufacturer. The product is a simple syrup preparation with no artificial colours or strong flavourings.
Possible Side Effects
Simple Linctus is generally very well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
- Mild stomach upset if taken on an empty stomach
- Tooth decay with prolonged use (due to sugar content)
- Diarrhoea (if large amounts are taken)
- Nausea in sensitive individuals
These effects are uncommon and usually mild. Most people experience no side effects when using this medicine as directed.
Who Should Not Use This Product
Do not use Simple Linctus if you:
- Are allergic to citric acid or any of the other ingredients
- Have diabetes (due to high sugar content) unless advised by your doctor
- Are following a low-sugar diet
- Have hereditary fructose intolerance
Consult your pharmacist or doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or giving to children under 1 year of age. If you have a productive cough (bringing up phlegm), consult your pharmacist as a different type of cough medicine may be more appropriate.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Do not refrigerate. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging. Once opened, use within 6 months and discard any remaining medicine after this time. Do not store in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Important Information

If any of the following happen, stop taking the medicine and tell your pharmacist immediately or go to the Accident and Emergency department at your nearest hospital:
- Allergic reactions including swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing
These are very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious allergic reaction to the medicine. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
