Prochlorperazine 3mg Buccal Tablets 8 Pack (Brand May Vary)

Prochlorperazine 3mg Buccal Tablets are an effective antiemetic medicine designed to provide fast relief from nausea and vomiting. These specially formulated tablets are placed between the upper lip and gum where they dissolve slowly, allowing the active ingredient to be absorbed directly through the mouth lining. This unique delivery method makes them particularly useful when swallowing tablets is difficult due to severe nausea or vomiting. They are also indicated for the treatment of migraine-associated nausea and vomiting.

    How It Works

Prochlorperazine belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazines, which work as dopamine receptor antagonists. The medicine blocks dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain, which is responsible for controlling nausea and vomiting. By preventing dopamine from binding to these receptors, prochlorperazine effectively reduces the sensation of nausea and prevents vomiting. The buccal delivery system allows for rapid absorption through the oral mucosa, providing faster onset of action compared to conventional tablets that must be swallowed and absorbed through the digestive system.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children over 18 years: Place one tablet high up between the upper lip and the gum and leave to dissolve slowly. Do not chew, suck, or swallow the tablet whole. The tablet should be positioned above the upper teeth, ideally near the canine tooth. Allow approximately 1-2 hours for complete dissolution. If symptoms persist, a second tablet may be taken after the first has completely dissolved, but do not exceed 2 tablets in 24 hours. Do not take more than 2 tablets in any 24-hour period. If you need to use this medicine for more than 2 days, consult your pharmacist or doctor. Wash your hands before handling the tablets.

    Active Ingredients

Each buccal tablet contains 3mg of prochlorperazine maleate as the active ingredient. The tablets also contain inactive ingredients including lactose, povidone, xanthan gum, cocoa butter, vanilla flavour, and other excipients necessary for the tablet formulation and controlled release.

    Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, prochlorperazine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, and dry mouth. Some people may experience a bitter taste or mild irritation at the site where the tablet is placed. Less common side effects can include tremor, muscle stiffness, unusual movements of the face or tongue, blurred vision, and difficulty sleeping. Rarely, some people may experience more serious side effects such as severe muscle spasms, high fever, confusion, or irregular heartbeat. If you experience any unusual or persistent side effects, contact your pharmacist or doctor.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to prochlorperazine or any other phenothiazine medicines, or to any of the other ingredients. Do not use if you have severe liver disease, bone marrow depression, or certain blood disorders. This medicine is not suitable for children under 18 years of age. Do not take if you have Parkinson’s disease or are taking levodopa. Avoid use if you have a history of narrow-angle glaucoma, enlarged prostate with urinary retention, or severe heart conditions. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by your doctor.

    Interactions

Prochlorperazine may interact with several other medicines. It can enhance the sedating effects of alcohol, sleeping tablets, strong painkillers, and some antihistamines. The medicine may interact with certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and medicines for epilepsy. It should not be taken with levodopa as it can reduce its effectiveness. Some medicines used for irregular heartbeat may also interact with prochlorperazine. Always tell your PillSorted pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements, to check for potential interactions.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not take prochlorperazine if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant unless your doctor has specifically advised you to do so. The medicine may pose risks to the developing baby, particularly in the first three months of pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, do not take this medicine as small amounts may pass into breast milk and could affect your baby. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, stop taking it immediately and consult your doctor. If you are planning to become pregnant, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor before taking this medicine to discuss safer alternatives for managing nausea.

    Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking prochlorperazine buccal tablets. Alcohol can increase the sedating effects of this medicine, making you feel more drowsy, dizzy, or confused. This combination can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery safely and may increase the risk of falls or accidents. The interaction between prochlorperazine and alcohol can also potentially worsen side effects such as low blood pressure and breathing difficulties.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

This medicine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, which can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or use tools or machines until you know how this medicine affects you and you are sure you can do so safely. These effects may be more pronounced when you first start taking the medicine or if the dose is increased. If you experience any visual disturbances or feel unsteady, avoid driving and seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor.

    Storage

Store the tablets in their original packaging in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Do not store in the bathroom or kitchen where it may become damp. Keep the tablets in their original foil packaging until you need to use them to protect them from moisture and light. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date shown on the packaging. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

    Important Information

All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious but most of the time they are not. Do not be alarmed by the list of possible side effects. You may not experience any of them. Ask your PillSorted pharmacist to answer any questions you may have.

If any of the following happen, stop taking the medicine and tell your pharmacist immediately or go to the Accident and Emergency department at your nearest hospital:

These are very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious allergic reaction to the medicine. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
