Description
Piriton Tablets 500 – Allergy Relief
Piriton Tablets contain chlorphenamine maleate, a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, urticaria (hives), insect bites and stings, and skin rashes.
⸻
How It Works
Chlorphenamine works by blocking histamine receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes symptoms such as itching, sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes. By blocking histamine, Piriton helps to reduce and relieve these uncomfortable symptoms.
⸻
Directions for Use
Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 1 tablet (4 mg) every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours. Children aged 6 to 12 years: take half a tablet (2 mg) every 4 to 6 hours as needed — do not give more than 3 tablets (6 doses of half a tablet) in 24 hours. Not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Tablets should be swallowed with water and can be taken with or without food. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

⸻
Interactions
Piriton may interact with other medicines that cause drowsiness, including sleeping tablets, sedatives, anti-anxiety medicines, and certain antidepressants, potentially increasing the sedative effect. It may also interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants, and medicines used to treat anxiety or psychosis. Some medicines used for stomach problems (such as atropine or hyoscine) may also interact. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safety of chlorphenamine during pregnancy has not been fully established, and it should be avoided during the third trimester and around the time of labour. Chlorphenamine passes into breast milk and may cause drowsiness in a breastfed infant, so it is not recommended during breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking Piriton Tablets. Alcohol can significantly increase the sedative (drowsy) effect of chlorphenamine, making it unsafe to drive, operate machinery, or carry out tasks that require concentration.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Piriton Tablets can cause significant drowsiness and may impair your ability to drive or use machinery. You should not drive, cycle, or operate heavy machinery if you feel drowsy after taking this medicine. This effect can be made worse by alcohol or other sedating medicines.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the tablets in their original packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
