Phenergan Elixir contains promethazine hydrochloride, an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as hay fever and skin reactions, to prevent and treat travel sickness, and as a short-term aid for sleep difficulties in adults and children aged 2 years and over.

How It Works

Promethazine hydrochloride works by blocking histamine receptors in the body, reducing allergic reactions such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. It also acts on the brain to reduce feelings of nausea and vomiting, and has a sedating effect that can help with sleep and motion sickness.

Directions for Use

Phenergan Elixir is taken by mouth using the measuring device provided. Doses vary depending on the condition being treated and the age of the patient:

Allergies (adults and children aged 10 and over): 10–20mg once or twice daily.
Travel sickness (adults): 25mg the night before travel, then 25mg on the morning of travel if needed.
Short-term insomnia (adults): 25mg at bedtime.
Children aged 2–5 years: doses should be confirmed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Possible Side Effects

• Drowsiness or sedation

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• Children under 2 years of age
• People who are allergic to promethazine or other phenothiazines
• People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping them
• People with severe liver problems
• People in a comatose state or with central nervous system depression
• People with certain heart conditions (e.g., QT prolongation)

Interactions

Phenergan Elixir may interact with other sedating medicines, antidepressants (especially MAOIs and tricyclics), antipsychotics, medicines for epilepsy, and certain pain relievers such as opioids. It may also interact with some heart medicines, anticholinergic drugs, and metoclopramide. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Promethazine should be used with caution during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, as it may affect the newborn. It is not recommended during breastfeeding as the active ingredient may pass into breast milk. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

You should not drink alcohol while taking Phenergan Elixir. Alcohol increases the sedating effect of promethazine, which can cause excessive drowsiness and impair your ability to react safely.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Phenergan Elixir causes significant drowsiness and sedation. You should not drive, cycle, or operate heavy machinery while taking this medicine. The sedating effects may persist into the following day, so care should be taken even after waking.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, use within the period stated on the bottle label. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
