Description
Paracetamol 500mg – 32 Capsules
Paracetamol 500mg Capsules provide effective relief from mild to moderate pain, including headaches, toothache, sore throats, period pain, and migraines. They can also help to reduce fever (high temperature) in adults and children aged 12 years and over.
⸻
How It Works
Paracetamol works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain and nervous system called prostaglandins, which are responsible for signalling pain and raising body temperature. This helps to reduce both the sensation of pain and any associated fever, without causing irritation to the stomach lining.
⸻
Directions for Use
Adults and children aged 16 and over: take 1–2 capsules every 4–6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 8 capsules (4,000mg) in 24 hours. Children aged 12–15 years: take 1 capsule every 4–6 hours as needed, with a maximum of 4 capsules in 24 hours. Leave at least 4 hours between doses. Swallow the capsules whole with a glass of water. Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing products. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Paracetamol 500mg per capsule
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Paracetamol is generally very well tolerated when taken as directed. Side effects are rare but may include:
• Skin rash or allergic reaction
• Low blood pressure (hypotension) if given intravenously — not applicable to oral capsules
• Blood disorders (very rare with normal use)
• Liver or kidney problems (usually associated with overdose or long-term excessive use)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
Do not take these capsules if you:
• Are allergic to paracetamol or any of the other ingredients
• Have severe liver or kidney problems
• Are already taking other medicines that contain paracetamol
• Are under 12 years of age
• Have been advised by a doctor to avoid paracetamol
⸻
Interactions
Paracetamol can interact with certain medicines. Take care if you are also taking:
• Warfarin or other anticoagulants (blood-thinning medicines) — regular use of paracetamol may increase the risk of bleeding
• Other medicines containing paracetamol (e.g. cold and flu remedies, co-codamol) — do not take together as this can lead to overdose
• Metoclopramide or domperidone — may speed up paracetamol absorption
• Colestyramine — may reduce the effectiveness of paracetamol
• Certain medicines for epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine) — may affect how paracetamol is broken down in the body
Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Paracetamol has been widely used during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is generally considered the preferred painkiller for these situations when used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. However, you should always use the lowest dose needed and avoid taking it for extended periods. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking paracetamol, particularly in large amounts. Combining paracetamol with heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of liver damage. Occasional moderate drinking is unlikely to cause harm, but speak to your PillSorted pharmacist if you are unsure.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Paracetamol capsules do not cause drowsiness and are not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you feel unwell due to the condition you are treating, take care when driving or using machinery until you feel better.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
