Description
Orajel Extra Strength Dental Gel – 5.3g
Orajel Extra Strength Dental Gel is a fast-acting local anaesthetic gel used to relieve toothache pain. It contains a high-strength dose of benzocaine (20% w/w) and is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.
⸻
How It Works
Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals in the area where it is applied. When the gel is placed directly on or around the affected tooth, it numbs the surrounding tissue and reduces the sensation of pain.
⸻
Directions for Use
For adults and children aged 12 and over, apply a small amount of gel directly to the affected tooth or surrounding gum area using a clean fingertip or cotton swab. Use up to four times daily, but do not use for more than 7 days without speaking to a dentist or doctor. Do not swallow the gel. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Benzocaine 20% w/w
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Local skin or gum irritation at the site of application
• Redness or soreness of the mouth
• Allergic reaction (such as rash, itching, or swelling — rare)
• A temporary burning or stinging sensation when first applied
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• Children under 12 years of age
• Anyone with a known allergy to benzocaine or other local anaesthetics of the ester type
• Anyone with a known allergy to any other ingredient in the gel
• People with a condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
⸻
Interactions
Orajel Extra Strength Dental Gel is applied topically and is unlikely to interact significantly with most oral medicines when used as directed. However, benzocaine may theoretically interact with certain medicines used to treat heart conditions or other local anaesthetics. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
There is limited safety data on the use of topical benzocaine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As it is applied locally, systemic absorption is minimal; however, caution is still advised. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There are no known interactions between Orajel Extra Strength Dental Gel and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the mouth and gums and may worsen dental pain, so it is best avoided while you are being treated for toothache.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Orajel Extra Strength Dental Gel is applied topically and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. It does not cause drowsiness when used as directed.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
