Description
Movicol Powder Chocolate – 30 Sachets
Movicol Powder Chocolate is a laxative medicine used to treat constipation and faecal impaction (a severe build-up of hard stools) in adults and children aged 12 and over. It comes in a pleasant chocolate flavour and works gently to help restore normal bowel movements.
⸻
How It Works
The main active ingredient, macrogol, works by drawing water into the bowel from the surrounding body tissue. This softens hard stools and increases the volume of fluid in the bowel, making it easier to pass a bowel movement. Unlike some other laxatives, Movicol does not cause the body to lose water or important salts (electrolytes), reducing the risk of dehydration.
⸻
Directions for Use
For constipation in adults and children aged 12 and over, the usual dose is 1 to 3 sachets per day, dissolved in water. Each sachet should be dissolved in 125 ml (approximately half a glass) of water and drunk straight away. For faecal impaction, a higher dose of up to 8 sachets per day may be required — these can be taken over a 6-hour period. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
Each sachet of Movicol Powder Chocolate contains:
• Macrogol 3350 — 13.125 g
• Sodium chloride — 350.7 mg
• Sodium hydrogen carbonate — 178.5 mg
• Potassium chloride — 46.6 mg
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, Movicol can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:
• Bloating or a feeling of fullness
• Stomach cramps or abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea (especially if the dose is too high)
• Wind (flatulence)
• Headache
“If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.”
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
Do not use Movicol Powder Chocolate if you:
• Are allergic to macrogol (polyethylene glycol) or any other ingredient in this product
• Have a bowel obstruction (intestinal blockage) or a perforated bowel
• Have a condition called toxic megacolon
• Have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (unless advised by your doctor)
• Have severe inflammatory conditions of the bowel
• Are a child under 12 years of age (this formulation is not suitable for younger children)
⸻
Interactions
Movicol is not known to interact significantly with most medicines. However, because it works by drawing water into the bowel, it may theoretically affect the absorption of other medications if taken at the same time — so it is generally advisable to take other medicines at a different time of day. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Movicol is generally considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as macrogol is not significantly absorbed into the body. However, it is always best to seek individual advice before starting any new medicine. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There are no known interactions between Movicol Powder Chocolate and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation, so it is sensible to drink plenty of water and limit alcohol consumption while treating constipation.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Movicol Powder Chocolate does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue with your normal activities while taking this medicine.
⸻
Storage
Store Movicol Powder Chocolate sachets below 25°C in a dry place. Once dissolved in water, the solution should be used within 6 hours. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
