Description
Lactulose 10g/15ml Oral Solution – 10 Sachets
Lactulose Oral Solution is used to relieve constipation in adults and children. Each sachet contains 10g of lactulose in 15ml of oral solution, making it a convenient, pre-measured dose for easy use.
⸻
How It Works
Lactulose is an osmotic laxative — a type of sugar that is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it draws water into the bowel, which softens the stool and gently stimulates the bowel to move. It can take 24 to 48 hours before you notice an improvement in your symptoms.
⸻
Directions for Use
The usual doses are as follows:
• Adults and children aged 14 and over: 1–3 sachets (15–45ml) twice daily
• Children aged 7–14 years: Half to 1 sachet (7.5–15ml) twice daily
The solution can be taken as it is or mixed with water or juice. It is best taken with meals. Doses should be adjusted after a few days depending on your response. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Lactulose 10g per 15ml sachet
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Flatulence (wind) and bloating, particularly at the start of treatment
• Stomach cramps or discomfort
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea (if the dose is too high)
• Electrolyte imbalance with prolonged high-dose use
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to lactulose or any other ingredient in this product
• People with galactosaemia (a rare inherited condition affecting how the body processes galactose)
• People with a blocked or perforated bowel (intestinal obstruction)
• People with a condition where a low-galactose or low-lactose diet is required
⸻
Interactions
Lactulose is not widely known to interact with most common medicines. However, if you are taking neomycin or other antibiotics, or medicines for heart conditions such as antiarrhythmics, these may be affected by electrolyte changes caused by lactulose at high doses. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Lactulose is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as very little is absorbed into the bloodstream. However, it is always best to seek professional guidance before starting any new medicine. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known interaction between lactulose and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation, so it is sensible to drink plenty of water while being treated for constipation.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Lactulose does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can carry out these activities as normal while taking this medicine.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
