Hedrin 4% Lotion is a treatment for head lice (nits) and their eggs, suitable for adults and children aged 6 months and over. It is a pharmacy medicine available without a prescription.

How It Works

Hedrin 4% Lotion contains dimethicone, a silicone-based ingredient that works by physically coating and blocking the breathing and water-management systems of head lice and their eggs. Unlike traditional insecticide-based treatments, it kills lice through a purely physical action, which means lice cannot develop resistance to it. The lotion is odourless and gentle on the skin.

Directions for Use

Apply the lotion directly to dry hair, making sure to cover the whole scalp and all the hair from roots to tips. Leave it on for a minimum of 8 hours (or overnight), then wash off using a normal shampoo. Comb through the hair with a fine-toothed nit comb after washing to remove dead lice and eggs. Repeat the treatment after 7 days to catch any lice that may have hatched since the first application. Hedrin 4% Lotion is suitable for adults and children aged 6 months and over. Possible Side Effects

Hedrin 4% Lotion is generally very well tolerated. Reported side effects are uncommon but may include:
• Skin irritation or redness at the application site
• Itching of the scalp
• A temporary burning or stinging sensation on the skin
• Eye irritation if the lotion comes into contact with the eyes (rinse thoroughly with water if this occurs)

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• People with a known allergy to dimethicone or any other ingredient in the lotion
• Children under 6 months of age (unless under direct medical supervision)
• Do not use near an open flame or heat source while the lotion is being applied or before it has fully dried, as it contains flammable ingredients

Interactions

Hedrin 4% Lotion is applied to the skin and is not absorbed into the body in significant amounts, so it is unlikely to interact with medicines taken by mouth or other treatments. Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not store near an open flame or other ignition sources. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
