    Description

    Glycerin 4mg Suppositories (Adults) – 12 Pack

Glycerin suppositories are a gentle and effective treatment for constipation in adults. They work locally in the rectum to soften stools and encourage a natural bowel movement, typically within 15 to 30 minutes of use.

    How It Works

Glycerin is a type of osmotic laxative. When inserted into the rectum, it draws water into the bowel from the surrounding tissues, softening and lubricating the stool. This also gently stimulates the bowel wall, encouraging the muscles to contract and helping to pass the stool more easily.

    Directions for Use

For adults and children aged 12 years and over, one suppository should be inserted into the rectum as directed. If possible, moisten the suppository with water before insertion to make it more comfortable. Remain lying down for a few minutes after insertion to allow the suppository to dissolve and take effect. Do not use more than one suppository per day unless advised by a doctor. These suppositories are intended for short-term use only. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Glycerol (Glycerin) — 4g per suppository

    Possible Side Effects

    • Rectal irritation or discomfort after insertion
    • A feeling of urgency to pass a stool
    • Mild cramping or abdominal discomfort
    • Rectal burning or stinging sensation
    • Diarrhoea if used too frequently

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People with a known allergy to glycerol or any other ingredient in the suppository
    • People with inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (unless advised by a doctor)
    • People with rectal bleeding of unknown cause
    • People with a bowel obstruction
    • Children under 12 years of age (an age-appropriate formulation should be used instead)

    Interactions

Glycerin suppositories work locally in the rectum and are not significantly absorbed into the bloodstream, so they are unlikely to interact with most other medicines. However, you should avoid using other rectal preparations at the same time unless directed by a doctor. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Glycerin suppositories are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as they act locally and are minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. However, it is always best to try dietary measures such as increased fluid and fibre intake first. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known interaction between glycerin suppositories and alcohol. As this medicine acts locally in the rectum and is not absorbed into the bloodstream in significant amounts, alcohol consumption is not expected to affect how this medicine works.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Glycerin suppositories are not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to concentrate. They should not impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, as the suppositories work quickly — usually within 15 to 30 minutes — it is advisable to remain near toilet facilities after use.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate unless stated on the packaging, as this may make insertion more difficult. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
