Gaviscon Original Liquid Peppermint is an antacid and alginate medicine used to relieve the discomfort of heartburn, indigestion, and gastric reflux, including heartburn during pregnancy. It comes in a pleasant peppermint flavour and works quickly to soothe symptoms after eating or at bedtime.

How It Works

When you swallow Gaviscon Original Liquid, the sodium alginate reacts with the acid in your stomach to form a thick, gel-like “raft” that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid from travelling back up into your oesophagus (food pipe) and causing the burning sensation associated with heartburn and reflux. The antacid ingredients also help to neutralise excess stomach acid for added relief.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoons) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily. Children under 12 years should not use this product unless directed by a doctor. Take the liquid after meals and at bedtime for best results. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Active Ingredients

Per 10 ml dose:
• Sodium alginate 500 mg
• Sodium bicarbonate 267 mg
• Calcium carbonate 160 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Original Liquid is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing)
• Bloating or wind
• Nausea
• Constipation or diarrhoea (uncommon)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take this medicine if you:
• Are allergic to sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, or any other ingredient in this product
• Have been advised by your doctor to follow a low-sodium (low-salt) diet, without first seeking medical advice
• Have severely reduced kidney function (unless directed by a doctor)
• Are a child under 12 years of age (unless prescribed by a doctor)

Interactions

Gaviscon Original Liquid may affect the absorption of some medicines if taken at the same time. It is advisable to take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after taking Gaviscon. In particular, medicines such as certain antibiotics, thyroid medications, iron supplements, and bisphosphonates may be affected. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Original Liquid is commonly recommended to relieve heartburn during pregnancy. However, due to its sodium content, it should be used with caution during pregnancy, particularly if you have been advised to limit your salt intake. It is considered generally suitable for use whilst breastfeeding, but it is always best to check before starting any new medicine. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known interaction between Gaviscon Original Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to limit alcohol consumption if you are experiencing these symptoms.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Original Liquid does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue your normal daily activities whilst taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Once opened, use within the period stated on the packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
