    Description

    Galfer Syrup – 300ml

Galfer Syrup contains ferrous fumarate, an iron supplement used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia. It is suitable for adults and children, and is often recommended for those who struggle to swallow tablets or capsules.

    How It Works

Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. When your iron levels are too low, your body cannot make enough healthy red blood cells, leaving you feeling tired, weak, or breathless. Ferrous fumarate replenishes your iron stores, helping your body produce healthy red blood cells and restore your energy levels over time.

    Directions for Use

The usual dose for adults and children over 12 years for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia is 10 ml (equivalent to 140 mg ferrous fumarate) twice daily. For prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in adults, 5 ml once daily is typically recommended. For children under 12, refer to the patient information leaflet for weight-appropriate dosing guidance. Galfer Syrup can be taken with or after food to help reduce stomach upset. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Ferrous fumarate 140 mg per 5 ml

    Possible Side Effects

    • Nausea or stomach upset
    • Constipation or diarrhoea
    • Dark or black stools (this is normal and harmless)
    • Stomach cramps or discomfort
    • Loss of appetite
    • Heartburn

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People with haemochromatosis (iron overload disorder) or haemosiderosis
    • People with haemolytic anaemia (where red blood cells are destroyed too quickly)
    • People who are allergic to ferrous fumarate or any of the other ingredients
    • People with conditions that cause repeated blood transfusions
    • Children under 1 year of age unless directed by a doctor

    Interactions

Iron supplements can reduce the absorption of certain medicines, including antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones), bisphosphonates, levodopa, methyldopa, and levothyroxine — leave at least 2 hours between taking these medicines and Galfer Syrup. Antacids, calcium supplements, and dairy products may also reduce iron absorption if taken at the same time. Tea, coffee, and foods high in phytates (such as bran) can reduce how much iron is absorbed from the syrup. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Ferrous fumarate is commonly used during pregnancy to treat or prevent iron deficiency anaemia, which is particularly common in expectant mothers. It is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when taken at the recommended dose. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between ferrous fumarate and alcohol. However, excessive alcohol consumption can affect your general health and nutritional status, which may impact your iron levels. It is advisable to drink alcohol in moderation while being treated for iron deficiency anaemia.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Galfer Syrup is not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You should be safe to drive as normal whilst taking this medicine.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
