Description
Calamine Lotion – 200ml
Calamine Lotion is a soothing topical treatment used to relieve itching, irritation, and discomfort caused by minor skin conditions including chickenpox, insect bites and stings, sunburn, heat rash, and hives (urticaria). It is suitable for adults and children and can be applied directly to the affected area of skin.
⸻
How It Works
Calamine lotion contains two active ingredients — calamine and zinc oxide — which work together on the surface of the skin. When applied, the lotion evaporates quickly, creating a gentle cooling sensation that helps to ease itching and discomfort. Zinc oxide also has mild antiseptic and astringent properties, which help to dry out any weeping or oozing caused by skin irritation.
⸻
Directions for Use
Shake the bottle well before use. Apply the lotion to the affected area of skin using cotton wool or a clean cloth, repeating as often as needed to relieve itching and discomfort. It is suitable for use in adults, children, and infants; however, for babies and young children, seek advice before use. Avoid applying to broken or infected skin, and keep away from the eyes. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Calamine 150 mg/5 ml (15% w/v)
• Zinc Oxide 50 mg/5 ml (5% w/v)
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Calamine lotion is generally very well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
• Skin irritation or redness at the site of application
• Dryness or tightness of the skin after use
• Allergic skin reaction (rash, itching, or swelling) — uncommon but possible
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People with a known allergy to calamine, zinc oxide, or any other ingredient in the lotion
• Do not apply to open wounds, broken, or infected skin
• Do not use near the eyes or mucous membranes
• If you have a known skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, seek advice from your PillSorted pharmacist before use
⸻
Interactions
Calamine lotion is applied to the skin only and is not significantly absorbed into the body, so interactions with other medicines are unlikely. However, avoid applying at the same time as other topical preparations on the same area of skin, as this may reduce the effectiveness of both products. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Calamine lotion is considered low-risk as it is applied topically and has minimal systemic absorption. It has been used traditionally during pregnancy and breastfeeding for conditions such as itching associated with chickenpox. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known interaction between calamine lotion and alcohol. As this medicine is applied to the skin and is not taken orally, alcohol consumption does not affect its safety or effectiveness.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Calamine lotion is a topical product and is not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue to drive and carry out normal activities whilst using this product.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
