Description
Benadryl Allergy Children’s 1 mg/ml Oral Solution – 70ml
Benadryl Allergy Children’s Oral Solution is a banana-flavoured liquid medicine containing cetirizine, used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and other allergies in children aged 6 years and over. It is sugar-free and dye-free, making it a gentle option for children who need allergy relief.
⸻
How It Works
Cetirizine is a non-sedating antihistamine that works by blocking histamine receptors in the body. Histamine is a chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes symptoms such as sneezing, itching, a runny nose, and watery eyes. By blocking histamine, cetirizine helps to reduce and control these symptoms.
⸻
Directions for Use
This medicine is for children aged 6 years and over. Use the measuring spoon or syringe provided to give the correct dose.
• Children aged 6 to 12 years: 5 ml (5 mg) twice daily
• Children aged 12 years and over: 10 ml (10 mg) once daily
Give the solution by mouth. It can be taken with or without food. Do not give more than the recommended dose. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Cetirizine hydrochloride 1 mg per 1 ml
⸻
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, cetirizine can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:
• Drowsiness or tiredness
• Headache
• Dry mouth
• Stomach pain or nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Feeling dizzy
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
Do not give this medicine if the child:
• Is under 6 years of age
• Is allergic to cetirizine hydrochloride, hydroxyzine, or any other ingredient in the product
• Has severe kidney (renal) impairment
• Has a known allergy to piperazine derivatives
Refer to the patient information leaflet for full details.
⸻
Interactions
Cetirizine may interact with other medicines that cause drowsiness, such as sedatives, sleeping tablets, or anxiety medicines, potentially increasing the sedative effect. Theophylline (used for breathing conditions) may also reduce the elimination of cetirizine from the body. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
This product is intended for use in children aged 6 years and over. However, if a parent or carer who is pregnant or breastfeeding is also considering this medicine for personal use, cetirizine is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
Alcohol is not relevant for the child patients this medicine is intended for. However, it is worth noting that combining cetirizine with alcohol in adults may increase the risk of drowsiness and impaired concentration. This children’s oral solution itself does not contain alcohol.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Although cetirizine is classed as a non-sedating antihistamine, it can occasionally cause drowsiness or dizziness in some children. Parents and carers should monitor how the medicine affects the child, particularly when first starting treatment. Children should not cycle or use equipment unsupervised if they feel drowsy after taking this medicine.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Once opened, use the solution within the period stated on the packaging — refer to the patient information leaflet for full details. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
