Description
Algesal Cream – 50gram
Algesal Cream is a topical analgesic (pain-relieving) cream used to help relieve muscular aches and pains, including rheumatic pain, backache, sprains, and strains. It is applied directly to the skin over the affected area to provide localised relief.
⸻
How It Works
Algesal Cream contains diethylamine salicylate, which belongs to a group of medicines called salicylates — similar to aspirin. When rubbed into the skin, it is absorbed into the tissues beneath, where it helps to reduce pain and inflammation in muscles and joints. The cream also produces a mild warming sensation that can help to ease discomfort.
⸻
Directions for Use
For adults and children aged 12 years and over: apply a small amount of cream to the affected area and gently massage in until absorbed. This can be done up to 3 times daily. Do not apply to broken, damaged, or irritated skin, and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Do not use for more than 7 days without seeking medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Diethylamine salicylate 10% w/w
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Skin irritation, redness, or rash at the site of application
• Mild burning or stinging sensation on application
• Allergic skin reactions (such as itching or hives) — rare
• If absorbed in large quantities, salicylate-related effects may occur — very rare with normal use
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• Children under 12 years of age
• People with a known allergy or sensitivity to salicylates, aspirin, or any other ingredient in the cream
• People with broken, infected, or inflamed skin in the area to be treated
• Those who have been advised to avoid aspirin or similar medicines by their doctor
• Do not apply near the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes
⸻
Interactions
Although Algesal Cream is applied topically, small amounts of diethylamine salicylate may be absorbed through the skin. Use with caution alongside anticoagulant medicines (such as warfarin), as salicylates can potentially affect blood clotting. If you are taking any medicines that interact with aspirin or other salicylates, seek advice before using this cream. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Algesal Cream is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester, as salicylates may carry risks to the unborn baby. The safety of using this cream during breastfeeding has not been fully established. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known direct interaction between Algesal Cream and alcohol when used as directed. However, if you have any concerns, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist for personalised advice.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Algesal Cream is applied to the skin and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience any unexpected reactions after use, exercise caution and seek advice if needed.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
