    What’s in This Pack

    • 6 x Emla 5% Cream 5g Cream – 12 Dressings
    • Identical to the single tube — same manufacturer, same product

    How It Works

Emla Cream contains two local anaesthetics — lidocaine and prilocaine — that work together to temporarily block the nerve signals in the skin. This prevents pain signals from being sent to the brain, making the treated area numb. The cream needs to be applied under an occlusive dressing for a set period before the procedure to allow it to take effect.

    Directions for Use

For adults and children aged 1 year and over, apply a thick layer of cream (approximately 1.5–2g per 10cm² of skin) to the area to be treated and cover with one of the included occlusive dressings. Leave in place for at least 60 minutes before a needle procedure, or up to 5 hours for minor skin procedures. The skin should be wiped clean before starting the procedure. In children under 3 months or low-birthweight infants, Emla is not recommended — refer to the patient information leaflet for full age-specific guidance. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People with a known allergy to lidocaine, prilocaine, or any other local anaesthetic of the amide type
    • People with a known allergy to any other ingredient in the cream
    • Infants under 37 weeks gestational age (premature babies)
    • Infants under 0–3 months of age (unless under medical supervision)
    • People with congenital or idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia
    • Do not apply to broken, infected, or inflamed skin

    Interactions

Emla Cream may interact with certain medicines that can increase the risk of methaemoglobinaemia, including some antibiotics (such as sulphonamides), antimalarials, and medicines used to treat pain or heart conditions. Other local anaesthetic medicines or drugs in the same class (amide-type local anaesthetics) may also interact if used at the same time. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Emla Cream is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when applied correctly and for short periods, as only very small amounts are absorbed into the bloodstream. However, it should be used with caution, particularly in later pregnancy, as prilocaine may increase the risk of methaemoglobinaemia in the baby. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known interaction between Emla 5% Cream and alcohol when the cream is used topically as directed. The cream is applied to the skin and is not taken by mouth, so alcohol consumption is unlikely to affect how the medicine works.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Emla 5% Cream is applied to the skin and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Only very small amounts of the active ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream when used as directed. However, consider the nature of the procedure for which the cream is being used, as that may affect your fitness to drive.

    Storage

Store Emla 5% Cream below 25°C. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
