    Description

    Promethazine Hydrochloride 25mg – 56 Tablets

Promethazine Hydrochloride 25mg tablets are an antihistamine medicine used to relieve allergic conditions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and skin reactions, as well as to prevent and treat travel sickness and to provide short-term relief from insomnia.

    How It Works

Promethazine works by blocking histamine receptors in the body, reducing the effects of histamine — a natural chemical that causes allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. It also acts on the brain to reduce feelings of nausea and to cause sedation, which is why it is used for travel sickness and short-term sleep problems.

    Directions for Use

For allergies (adults and children aged 10 and over): the usual dose is 25mg at night, which may be increased to 25mg twice daily if needed. For travel sickness (adults and children aged 10 and over): 25mg taken 1–2 hours before travel, with a further 25mg dose at bedtime if required. For short-term insomnia (adults aged 16 and over): 25mg taken at bedtime. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    • Children under 10 years of age (or under 16 for insomnia)
    • People who are allergic to promethazine or any other ingredient in the tablet
    • People with certain eye conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma
    • People with an enlarged prostate gland or difficulty urinating

    Interactions

Promethazine can interact with a number of medicines, including other sedatives, sleeping tablets, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiety medicines, opioid painkillers, and anticholinergic medicines (such as those used for bladder problems or stomach cramps). These combinations may increase the risk of drowsiness or other side effects. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Promethazine is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, as it may affect the newborn baby. It may pass into breast milk and could cause sedation in a breastfed infant. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

You should not drink alcohol whilst taking promethazine. Alcohol significantly increases the sedative effects of this medicine, which can make you very drowsy and impair your ability to function safely.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Promethazine causes significant drowsiness and sedation, which will impair your ability to drive or use machinery safely. You should not drive, cycle, or operate heavy machinery whilst taking this medicine. The sedative effect may last into the following day, so exercise caution even if you took promethazine the night before.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
