Preparation H Ointment is used to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of haemorrhoids (piles), including itching, burning, soreness, and swelling around the back passage. It can be used to treat both internal and external haemorrhoids.

How It Works

Preparation H Ointment contains two active ingredients that work together to provide relief. Shark liver oil acts as a protective barrier and helps soothe irritated tissue, whilst also supporting the healing of delicate skin around the anal area. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a mild vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows the blood vessels in the affected area to help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. The ointment also acts as a lubricant, making it easier and more comfortable to pass stools.

Directions for Use

For adults and children aged 12 years and over: apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area up to four times daily, particularly in the morning, at night, and after each bowel movement. Clean the area gently before applying. For internal use, use the applicator nozzle provided. This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Possible Side Effects

• Local skin irritation or a burning sensation at the site of application
• Allergic skin reactions such as redness, rash, or itching
• Dry or peeling skin around the treated area
• Rarely, increased heart rate or raised blood pressure (particularly if used excessively)

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• People who are allergic to any of the ingredients, including shark liver oil or phenylephrine
• Children under 12 years of age
• People with an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
• People with high blood pressure (hypertension) unless under medical supervision
• People with cardiovascular disease, unless advised by a doctor
• Do not use if you have rectal bleeding of unknown cause — consult your doctor first

Interactions

Phenylephrine may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and certain antidepressants, potentially causing a dangerous rise in blood pressure. It may also interact with other medicines used for high blood pressure, heart conditions, or thyroid disorders. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The safety of Preparation H Ointment during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established. The phenylephrine component may be absorbed into the body to a small extent, and caution is advised. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known interaction between Preparation H Ointment and alcohol. However, alcohol may contribute to dehydration and harder stools, which could worsen haemorrhoid symptoms, so it is sensible to drink alcohol in moderation if you are experiencing piles.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Preparation H Ointment is applied topically and is not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You should be safe to drive and carry out normal daily activities whilst using this product.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
