    Description

Ovex – 1 Threadworm Treatment Tablet

Ovex is a pharmacy medicine used to treat threadworm infections (also known as pinworms) in adults and children aged 2 years and over. It contains the active ingredient mebendazole, which effectively clears threadworm infections with a single tablet.

    How It Works

Mebendazole works by blocking the threadworms’ ability to absorb glucose (sugar), which is their only source of energy. Without glucose, the worms are unable to survive and die within a few days, allowing your body to clear them naturally.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 2 years and over should take one tablet (100 mg mebendazole) as a single dose. The tablet can be chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed and mixed with food. Because threadworms spread easily between people, it is strongly recommended that all household members are treated at the same time, even if they have no symptoms. If re-infection occurs within 2 weeks, a second dose may be taken. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Mebendazole 100 mg per tablet

    Possible Side Effects

Ovex is generally well tolerated, but some people may experience:
    • Stomach pain or discomfort
    • Diarrhoea
    • Flatulence (wind)
    • Nausea
    • Skin rash, itching, or hives (rare)
    • Dizziness (rare)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • Children under 2 years of age
    • Anyone who is pregnant or thinks they may be pregnant
    • Anyone with a known allergy to mebendazole or any other ingredient in the tablet
    • Anyone with a known allergy to peanuts or soya (the tablet contains soya lecithin — refer to the patient information leaflet for full details)

    Interactions

Mebendazole may interact with certain medicines, including metronidazole and cimetidine, which can increase the level of mebendazole in the blood. There are no known significant food interactions with Ovex. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Ovex should not be used during pregnancy, as mebendazole may not be safe for the developing baby. If you are breastfeeding, the use of Ovex is generally not recommended, as small amounts of mebendazole may pass into breast milk. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known interaction between mebendazole and alcohol. However, as a general precaution, it is advisable to drink alcohol in moderation whilst being treated for any infection.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Ovex is not known to cause drowsiness or to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You should be safe to drive and carry out normal activities after taking this tablet.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the tablet in its original packaging until use. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
