Nurofen Joint & Back 10% Gel – 40g
Nurofen Joint & Back 10% Gel is a targeted topical pain relief gel containing ibuprofen, used to relieve localised pain and inflammation in the back, joints, and muscles. It is ideal for short-term relief of everyday aches, including backache, rheumatic pain, and minor sports injuries.
⸻
How It Works
The active ingredient, ibuprofen, belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When applied to the skin, it penetrates to the site of pain and works by reducing the production of prostaglandins — chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. Because the gel is applied directly to the affected area, it delivers targeted relief with minimal absorption into the bloodstream compared to oral ibuprofen.
⸻
Directions for Use
For adults and children aged 12 years and over: apply a 4–10 cm strip of gel to the affected area up to 3 times a day, leaving at least 4 hours between applications. Gently rub the gel into the skin until absorbed. Do not apply to broken, damaged, or infected skin, and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wash your hands after use. Do not use for more than 2 weeks without speaking to a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Ibuprofen 10% w/w (100 mg per gram of gel)
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Skin redness, rash, or itching at the site of application
• Skin dryness or peeling
• Burning or stinging sensation on the skin
• Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight) at the application site
• Allergic skin reactions (e.g., dermatitis)
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People who are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
• People who have previously had asthma, hives, or allergic reactions triggered by aspirin or other NSAIDs
• Children under 12 years of age
• People with broken, infected, or damaged skin at the application site
• Those in the third trimester (last 3 months) of pregnancy
⸻
Interactions
Topical ibuprofen gel is absorbed into the bloodstream in small amounts, so the risk of interactions with other medicines is low compared to oral ibuprofen. However, caution is advised if you are also taking oral NSAIDs, blood-thinning medicines (such as warfarin), or other topical skin preparations on the same area. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
This gel should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy, as ibuprofen may harm the unborn baby. Use during the first and second trimesters should be avoided unless considered essential by a doctor. Although systemic absorption from topical application is low, caution is advised during breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no significant interaction between topical ibuprofen gel and alcohol, as the amount of ibuprofen absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin is very small. However, if you are concerned, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist for personalised advice.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
