Mintec Peppermint Oil For IBS Relief – 84 Capsules
Mintec Peppermint Oil capsules are a licensed herbal medicine used to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, and discomfort. Each capsule contains peppermint oil, a well-established natural antispasmodic remedy.
⸻
How It Works
Peppermint oil works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the wall of the intestines, which helps to relieve painful spasms and cramping associated with IBS. This antispasmodic action can ease bloating and reduce the uncomfortable feelings of pressure in the abdomen. The capsules are specially coated (enteric-coated) so they pass through the stomach and release the peppermint oil directly in the intestines, where it is needed most.
⸻
Directions for Use
Mintec capsules are suitable for adults and children aged 15 years and over. The usual dose is one capsule, taken three times a day. Each capsule should be swallowed whole — do not chew or crush — with a glass of water, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before meals. Do not take with antacids, as these may cause the capsule coating to dissolve too early in the stomach. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻
Active Ingredients
• Peppermint Oil (Mentha x piperita) — 0.2 ml per capsule
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Heartburn or a burning sensation in the throat or gullet
• Perianal irritation or a burning sensation around the back passage
• Nausea
• Headache
• Allergic skin reactions (rash or itching)
• A temporary peppermint taste or smell in the mouth or breath
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• Children under 15 years of age
• Anyone with a known allergy to peppermint oil or any other ingredient in the capsule
• People with a hiatus hernia or severe gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), as the capsules may worsen symptoms
• Anyone with achlorhydria (absence of stomach acid)
• People with gallstones or bile duct obstruction — seek medical advice before use
⸻
Interactions
Mintec capsules should not be taken at the same time as antacids, as these can cause the protective coating of the capsule to break down in the stomach rather than the intestines, reducing effectiveness and potentially causing irritation. Peppermint oil may also interact with ciclosporin (an immunosuppressant medicine) — if you take ciclosporin, speak to your doctor before using Mintec. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safety of peppermint oil in pregnancy has not been fully established, and it is not recommended for use during pregnancy. There is limited information available regarding its use whilst breastfeeding, so caution is advised. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known interaction between Mintec peppermint oil capsules and alcohol. However, alcohol may aggravate IBS symptoms and gastrointestinal discomfort, so it is generally advisable to drink in moderation if you suffer from IBS.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Mintec peppermint oil capsules are not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. This medicine does not cause drowsiness.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct light and heat. Keep the capsules in their original packaging to protect them from moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
