Gaviscon Original Liquid Peppermint is an antacid medicine used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastric reflux. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over, and comes in a refreshing peppermint flavour.

How It Works

Gaviscon Original Liquid works in two ways: sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate neutralise excess stomach acid, while sodium alginate forms a thick, raft-like barrier that floats on top of the stomach contents. This barrier helps to prevent acid from rising back up into the oesophagus (food pipe), providing fast and effective relief from heartburn and reflux.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoons) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. The liquid should be taken after meals and at bedtime for best results. Active Ingredients

Per 10 ml dose:
• Sodium alginate 500 mg
• Sodium bicarbonate 267 mg
• Calcium carbonate 160 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Original Liquid is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
• Bloating or flatulence (wind)
• Nausea
• Allergic reactions (rare) such as skin rash, itching, or swelling

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take Gaviscon Original Liquid if you:
• Are allergic to any of the ingredients
• Have been advised to follow a low-sodium (low-salt) diet, as this product contains sodium
• Have severely reduced kidney function (unless advised by a doctor)
• Are a child under 12 years of age (unless directed by a doctor)
• Have high blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia) or kidney stones containing calcium

Interactions

Because Gaviscon Original Liquid contains antacids, it may affect the absorption of some other medicines if taken at the same time. It is recommended to leave a gap of at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other medicines, particularly antibiotics (such as tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, and some heart or thyroid medications. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Original Liquid is often considered suitable for use during pregnancy to relieve heartburn, but the sodium content should be taken into account. It is also generally considered safe during breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Original Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can worsen the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to limit alcohol consumption when suffering from these conditions.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Original Liquid is not known to cause drowsiness or to impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can drive as normal when taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. Once opened, use within the period stated on the packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
