Gaviscon Original Liquid Aniseed is an antacid and reflux suppressant used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastric reflux. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.

How It Works

After swallowing, sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate react with the acid naturally present in your stomach to form a thick, gel-like raft that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid from rising up into the oesophagus (food pipe) and causing the discomfort associated with heartburn and reflux.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 10–20 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Shake the bottle well before use and measure the dose carefully using a suitable measuring spoon or cup. Do not exceed the stated dose. Gaviscon Original Liquid is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Active Ingredients

Each 10 ml dose contains:
• Sodium alginate 500 mg
• Potassium bicarbonate 200 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Original Liquid is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
• Bloating or wind
• Nausea
• Allergic reactions (rare), such as skin rash or itching

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take Gaviscon Original Liquid Aniseed if:
• You are allergic to sodium alginate, potassium bicarbonate, or any other ingredient in this product
• You have been advised to follow a low-potassium or low-sodium diet
• You are a child under 12 years of age (unless directed by a doctor)
• You have severely reduced kidney function, unless your doctor has advised it is safe to do so

Interactions

Gaviscon Original Liquid may affect the absorption of some medicines if taken at the same time. It is advisable to leave a gap of at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other medicines, particularly antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, and thyroid medicines. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Original Liquid is commonly recommended as a first-line treatment for heartburn during pregnancy; however, it contains potassium bicarbonate and has a notable sodium content, so medical guidance is advised before prolonged use. It is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but individual circumstances vary. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Original Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen acid reflux symptoms, potentially reducing the effectiveness of this medicine. It is sensible to limit alcohol consumption if you are experiencing heartburn or indigestion.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Original Liquid does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You may continue to drive and carry out normal activities as usual.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, use within the period stated on the packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
