Gaviscon Double Action Liquid Mint is a fast-acting treatment for heartburn, acid indigestion, and the discomfort caused by acid reflux. It is available in a pleasant mint flavour and works quickly to bring relief after meals or at bedtime.

How It Works

This medicine uses a two-in-one approach to tackle heartburn and indigestion. Sodium alginate forms a thick, floating gel barrier on top of the stomach contents, helping to prevent acid from rising back into the oesophagus. At the same time, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate neutralise excess stomach acid, providing rapid relief from the burning sensation associated with heartburn and reflux.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 10–20 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Children under 12 years should only use this medicine on the advice of a doctor. Shake the bottle well before use and measure the dose carefully. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Active Ingredients

Each 10 ml dose contains:
• Sodium alginate 250 mg
• Sodium bicarbonate 133.5 mg
• Calcium carbonate 160 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Double Action is generally well tolerated, but side effects can occasionally occur:
• Flatulence (wind) or bloating
• Nausea or stomach discomfort
• Allergic reactions such as skin rash or itching (rare)
• Hypersensitivity reactions (rare)

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• People with a known allergy to any of the ingredients
• People who have been advised to follow a low-sodium (low-salt) diet, as this product contains sodium
• People with high blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia)
• People with kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) containing calcium
• Children under 12 years of age, unless directed by a doctor

Interactions

Gaviscon Double Action Liquid may affect the absorption of some other medicines if taken at the same time. In particular, it may reduce the effectiveness of medicines such as certain antibiotics (e.g. tetracyclines), iron supplements, and thyroid medicines. It is generally recommended to take other medicines at least two hours before or after taking Gaviscon. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Double Action Liquid is often recommended as a first-line treatment for heartburn during pregnancy due to its low systemic absorption. However, because this product contains sodium, it should be used with caution during pregnancy, particularly by those advised to limit their sodium intake. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Double Action Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to limit alcohol consumption while experiencing these symptoms.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Double Action Liquid is not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue to drive and use machinery as normal while taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, use within the period stated on the bottle. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
