Gaviscon Double Action Liquid Peppermint is an antacid and alginate medicine used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. It comes in convenient single-dose sachets with a refreshing peppermint flavour, making it ideal for use at home or on the go.

How It Works

Gaviscon Double Action works in two ways. The antacid ingredients (sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate) quickly neutralise excess stomach acid to relieve discomfort. At the same time, sodium alginate forms a protective gel-like barrier that floats on top of the stomach contents, helping to prevent acid from rising back up into the oesophagus (the food pipe) and causing heartburn or reflux.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 1 to 2 sachets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times per day. Each sachet should be swallowed directly or mixed with a small amount of water. Do not exceed 8 sachets in 24 hours. Gaviscon Double Action is not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless directed by a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Active Ingredients

Each 10 ml sachet contains:
• Sodium alginate 500 mg
• Sodium bicarbonate 213 mg
• Calcium carbonate 325 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Double Action is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling (rare)
• Bloating or flatulence
• Nausea

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take this medicine if you:
• Are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients
• Have been advised to follow a low-sodium diet (each sachet contains sodium)
• Have severely reduced kidney function (unless advised by a doctor)
• Are under 12 years of age (unless directed by a doctor)

Interactions

Because Gaviscon Double Action contains antacid ingredients, it may affect how other medicines are absorbed if taken at the same time. In particular, it is advisable to leave a gap of at least 2 hours before or after taking other medicines such as antibiotics, iron supplements, or medicines for thyroid conditions. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Double Action is generally considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used at the recommended dose, and is commonly recommended for pregnancy-related heartburn. However, due to its sodium content, use should be monitored if you are on a sodium-restricted diet. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Double Action and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to limit alcohol intake while experiencing these symptoms.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Double Action does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue normal activities after taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. The sachets do not require refrigeration. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
