    Description

    Ferrous Sulfate 200mg – 28 Tablets

Ferrous Sulfate 200mg tablets are used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anaemia — a condition where your body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. Each tablet provides 65mg of elemental iron to help restore your body’s iron levels.

    How It Works

Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to produce haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When iron levels are too low, your body cannot make enough healthy red blood cells, leading to symptoms such as tiredness, pale skin, and shortness of breath. Ferrous sulfate is an easily absorbed form of iron that helps top up your body’s stores and supports the production of healthy red blood cells.

    Directions for Use

Adults and the elderly: The usual dose is one tablet taken three times a day. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, ideally on an empty stomach — however, if they cause stomach upset, they can be taken with or after food. Taking ferrous sulfate with a source of vitamin C (such as a glass of orange juice) can help improve iron absorption. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Ferrous sulfate 200mg (providing approximately 65mg elemental iron) per tablet

    Possible Side Effects

    • Nausea or feeling sick
    • Stomach pain or discomfort
    • Constipation
    • Diarrhoea
    • Dark or black stools (this is normal and harmless)
    • Loss of appetite
    • Heartburn or indigestion

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • People who are allergic to ferrous sulfate or any of the other ingredients
    • People with iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis
    • People with anaemia not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., haemolytic anaemia)
    • People with disorders affecting iron use in the body
    • Children under the age specified on the packaging (check the patient information leaflet)
    • People with certain bowel conditions — speak to your doctor before use

    Interactions

Ferrous sulfate can interact with a number of medicines and reduce their effectiveness. Key interactions include antacids, tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, methyldopa, thyroxine, bisphosphonates, and penicillamine — leave at least 2 hours between taking these and ferrous sulfate. Calcium, zinc, and other mineral supplements may also reduce iron absorption if taken at the same time. Dairy products, tea, coffee, and foods high in phytates (such as wholegrains) can reduce how well iron is absorbed, so try to avoid these around the time of taking your tablet. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Iron supplementation is commonly required during pregnancy as iron demands increase significantly. However, the appropriate dose during pregnancy may differ from standard dosing, and iron supplements should only be taken on medical advice during this time. Ferrous sulfate can be used during breastfeeding, but the correct dose should be confirmed with a healthcare professional. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between ferrous sulfate and alcohol. However, excessive alcohol intake can affect iron absorption and overall nutritional status, so it is advisable to keep alcohol consumption within recommended limits while being treated for iron deficiency anaemia.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Ferrous sulfate is not known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, iron deficiency anaemia itself can cause fatigue and dizziness — if you are experiencing these symptoms, take care until your condition improves.

    Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Keep the tablets in their original packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
