Description
Ferrous Sulfate 200mg – 100 Tablets
Ferrous Sulfate 200mg tablets are used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anaemia — a condition where the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. Each tablet contains 65mg of elemental iron, which helps restore the body’s iron levels.
⸻
How It Works
Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to produce haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When iron levels are too low, your body cannot make enough healthy red blood cells, leading to tiredness, weakness, and breathlessness. Ferrous sulfate provides iron in a form that is easily absorbed through the gut, helping to replenish the body’s iron stores over time.
⸻
Directions for Use
The usual dose for adults and the elderly is one tablet, taken two to three times daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water and can be taken with or after food if they upset your stomach. It is best to take iron tablets on an empty stomach for maximum absorption, but taking with food can help reduce stomach side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.
⸻

• Ferrous Sulfate 200mg (equivalent to approximately 65mg elemental iron) per tablet
⸻
Possible Side Effects
• Nausea or stomach discomfort
• Constipation or diarrhoea
• Dark or black stools (this is harmless and expected)
• Stomach cramps or bloating
• Loss of appetite
• Heartburn or indigestion
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.
⸻
Who Should Not Take This Medicine
• People with haemochromatosis (iron overload disorder) or haemosiderosis
• People with haemolytic anaemia (where red blood cells are destroyed too quickly)
• People with known hypersensitivity to ferrous sulfate or any of the ingredients
• People receiving repeated blood transfusions
• Children under 12 years (unless under medical supervision)
• People with conditions causing iron accumulation in the body
⸻
Interactions
Ferrous sulfate can interact with several medicines and foods, reducing the absorption of either the iron or the other medicine. Key interactions include:
• Antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones) — iron can reduce their absorption; take at least 2 hours apart
• Antacids and calcium supplements — can reduce iron absorption; take at least 2 hours apart
• Levothyroxine (thyroid medication) — iron can reduce its effectiveness; take at least 4 hours apart
• Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronic acid) — absorption may be reduced
• Tea, coffee, and dairy products — can reduce iron absorption if consumed at the same time
• Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) — may increase iron absorption when taken together
Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Iron requirements increase during pregnancy, and iron deficiency anaemia is common in pregnant women. Ferrous sulfate is widely used in pregnancy under medical supervision, but the correct dose and suitability should always be confirmed by a healthcare professional. Iron passes into breast milk in small amounts and is generally considered safe during breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no specific interaction between ferrous sulfate and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining, which may worsen any digestive side effects associated with iron tablets. It is sensible to keep alcohol consumption within the recommended UK guidelines whilst taking this medicine.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Ferrous sulfate does not cause drowsiness and is not known to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you feel unwell whilst taking this medicine, exercise caution and seek advice if needed.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
