Andrews Original Salts is a well-known effervescent powder used to relieve upset stomach, indigestion, and constipation. It combines three active ingredients to provide fast, soothing relief from common digestive discomfort.

How It Works

Andrews Original Salts works in two ways. The sodium hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate of soda) and citric acid react with water to produce bubbles, helping to neutralise excess stomach acid and relieve indigestion and bloating. The magnesium sulphate acts as a gentle laxative by drawing water into the bowel, softening stools and helping to relieve constipation.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: dissolve one 5 g teaspoonful in half a glass of water (approximately 100 ml) and drink while still fizzing. This dose may be taken up to three times daily if needed. Andrews Original Salts is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Possible Side Effects

Andrews Original Salts is generally well tolerated, but possible side effects may include:
• Diarrhoea or loose stools (particularly if taken frequently or in large amounts)
• Stomach cramps or wind
• Nausea
• Increased thirst (due to sodium content)
• Electrolyte imbalance with prolonged or excessive use
If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take Andrews Original Salts if you:
• Are under 12 years of age
• Are allergic to any of the ingredients
• Have been advised to follow a low-sodium (low-salt) diet
• Have kidney disease or poor kidney function
• Have high levels of magnesium in your blood (hypermagnesaemia)
• Are taking other medicines that may interact (see Interactions section below)
• Have a condition causing bowel obstruction or severe abdominal pain of unknown cause

Interactions

Andrews Original Salts may interact with certain medicines. Take care if you are also taking:
• Antibiotics such as tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones (magnesium may reduce their absorption — take at least 2 hours apart)
• Medicines for osteoporosis or iron supplements (magnesium can reduce absorption)
• Medicines sensitive to changes in stomach acid, such as some antifungals or HIV medicines
• Lithium or other medicines where sodium intake should be monitored

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Andrews Original Salts contains sodium and magnesium, which may not be suitable during pregnancy, especially in large or frequent doses. Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Andrews Original Salts and alcohol. However, alcohol can worsen indigestion and upset stomach, which may reduce the effectiveness of this medicine. It is best to avoid alcohol if you are experiencing digestive discomfort.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Andrews Original Salts does not contain any ingredients known to cause drowsiness or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. It is considered safe to drive after taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed after each use, as the powder is sensitive to humidity and may lose its effervescent quality if exposed to air. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
