How It Works
Chlorphenamine maleate works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and a runny nose. By blocking histamine, Piriton helps to reduce or prevent these uncomfortable symptoms.
⸻
Directions for Use
Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 1 tablet (4 mg) every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. Piriton tablets are not recommended for children under 12 years of age without medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

Interactions
Piriton may interact with other medicines that cause drowsiness, including sleeping tablets, anxiety medicines, antidepressants, and strong painkillers — increasing the sedative effect. It should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping them. Chlorphenamine may also interact with anticholinergic medicines (such as those used for bladder problems), phenytoin, and certain antidepressants. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Piriton is not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester, as it may affect the newborn. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, as chlorphenamine may pass into breast milk and cause drowsiness in the baby. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Piriton. Alcohol can significantly increase the sedative effects of chlorphenamine, making you feel much more drowsy than usual, which can be dangerous — particularly if you need to drive or operate machinery.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Piriton commonly causes drowsiness and can slow your reaction times, which may affect your ability to drive or use machinery safely. Do not drive, cycle, or operate heavy machinery if you feel drowsy after taking this medicine. Drowsiness may be made worse by alcohol or other sedating medicines.
⸻
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
