Travelling with Mounjaro: A Pharmacist’s Travel Guide

Travelling with Mounjaro: A Pharmacist's Travel Guide - PillSorted Blog

Jetting off on holiday is always an exciting adventure, but if you are currently managing your health with GLP-1 weight loss injections, you might feel a little anxious about disrupting your routine. If you are travelling with Mounjaro or Wegovy for the first time, you probably have plenty of practical questions. How do you safely pack your medication? What should you do if nausea strikes at the airport? Will you have enough energy to enjoy your trip? In this guide, our Superintendent Pharmacist, Zeinab Ardeshir, shares her expert advice and personal tips as a pharmacist and a busy mother of three who also uses GLP-1 therapy.

Essential Tips for Travelling with Mounjaro

When you are on a modern weight management programme, your body undergoes several physiological shifts that can make your holiday experience feel different from previous trips. Understanding these changes is the first step to a successful journey. First, the appetite-suppressing effects of GLP-1 medications mean your hunger signals are significantly dampened. You cannot simply wait until you feel hungry to eat; instead, you must plan your meals like clockwork to ensure your body receives adequate nutrition.

Second, your thirst signals are also reduced, making dehydration a major risk. This is particularly true when flying, as aircraft cabin humidity typically drops to between 10% and 20%—far below the 30% to 60% we are accustomed to on the ground. Even mild dehydration can trigger headaches, fatigue, and nausea, which can easily ruin your first few days away. Sticking to a target of 2 to 3 litres of water daily is essential for maintaining your energy levels and supporting your overall healthy living goals.

Finally, travel often disrupts our daily routines, which can affect our sleep patterns, stress levels, and digestion. For those managing chronic conditions like obesity or diabetes, keeping a consistent routine is highly beneficial. When your schedule is disrupted, it can trigger sugar cravings or unexpected fatigue. Anticipating these shifts allows you to plan ahead and enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Packing Checklist: Travelling with Mounjaro and Other Medications

When preparing your luggage, the golden rule of travelling with Mounjaro is to always keep your medication in your hand luggage. Checked bags in the aircraft hold are subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations that can freeze and ruin your pens. To keep your journey stress-free, use this essential packing checklist:

If your Mounjaro pen is already in use, you do not need to keep it in the fridge while travelling. An opened Mounjaro pen can be safely stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 30 days. For comparison, an in-use Wegovy pen can be kept out of the fridge for up to 6 weeks. If you are travelling with children, remember to pack their essentials too, such as inhalers or liquid antibiotics, which must also be kept at regulated temperatures if required.

Managing Side Effects While Travelling with Mounjaro

The excitement and stress of travel can act as a trigger for common GLP-1 side effects, particularly nausea. Closed spaces, unusual smells, and irregular meal times at airports can easily upset your stomach. Fortunately, there are several practical tools you can pack in your hand luggage to manage these symptoms effectively.

Peppermint lozenges are excellent for settling an uneasy stomach, as is sipping cold water. Many travellers also find acupressure travel sickness bands highly effective; they are non-invasive, easy to wear, and loved by both adults and children. Keeping a pack of damp wet wipes nearby can also help you cool down and feel refreshed if you start to feel flushed or nauseous. If travel anxiety is affecting your stomach, taking a few quiet moments to practice deep breathing can support your mental health and calm your nervous system.

To keep nausea at bay, avoid large, greasy, or overly sweet meals before and during your journey. Instead, pack nutritious, easy-to-digest snacks such as crackers, dried fruits, nuts, or protein bars. Eating small amounts on a regular schedule will keep your blood sugar stable and prevent the sudden onset of nausea that occurs when your stomach is completely empty.

What to Do on Your Travel Day

On the day you travel, your primary goal is survival and comfort. If your scheduled injection day happens to fall on a heavy travel day, consider postponing your dose by 24 to 48 hours. GLP-1 medications have a long washout period, meaning they stay in your system for quite a while. Delaying your dose slightly will not impact your long-term weight loss progress, but it will prevent you from dealing with peak side effects while navigating airport security or a long flight.

Make sure you eat a small, balanced meal before leaving the house. Remember the golden rule of GLP-1 travel: do not be too hungry, and do not be too full. Both extremes can severely worsen nausea. During the journey, take regular breaks from screens, as looking at phones or tablets in moving vehicles is a major trigger for motion sickness. Encourage children to do the same by packing coloring books, stickers, or cuddly toys to keep them entertained without relying on screens.

Managing Your Weight and Routine on Holiday

A common worry for many patients is what will happen to their weight while they are away. It is important to remember that you have worked incredibly hard to reach this point in your journey. A week or two of holiday will not undo all of your progress. Holidays are a time for relaxation, family, and recharging your batteries, which is just as important for women’s health and general well-being as physical diet management.

If you are on a higher dose of Mounjaro, taking a complete break from your medication for more than a week or two can significantly increase your appetite when you return. If you choose to continue your treatment while away, simply adjust your schedule to make it manageable. Focus on slow, quiet mornings, eat a light breakfast with plenty of fluids, and build rest days into your itinerary. By keeping your expectations realistic and manageable, you can enjoy a wonderful, healthy holiday without the pressure of perfection.
