Taking Wegovy on Holiday: A Pharmacist’s Guide
Planning a well-deserved getaway is always exciting, but if you are currently on a weight loss journey, you might have a few questions about managing your medication while away. Taking your Wegovy on holiday requires a little bit of extra preparation, particularly when it comes to safe storage, navigating airport security, and looking after your changing body in warmer climates. In this guide, our superintendent pharmacist, Zeinab Ardeshir, shares her expert advice on how to travel safely and keep your skin and hair glowing while abroad.

How to Travel Safely with Wegovy on Holiday
Travelling with prescription medication can sometimes feel daunting, but with a clear plan, you can easily manage your medication while away. The most important step is ensuring you have the correct documentation for customs and airport security. Always travel with your medication in its original dispensing box. This box features your pharmacy dispensing label, which clearly displays your name, the prescriber’s details, and the date it was issued. This serves as official proof that the medication has been legally prescribed to you.
In addition to the physical box, it is highly recommended to carry a copy of your prescription—either printed or as a digital file on your phone. This is particularly useful for international travel where customs officials may require extra verification. If you are using needles for your injections, keeping them inside the dispensing box alongside your medication helps keep everything organised and reduces the risk of transit damage. Do not forget to pack a portable sharps disposal bin to safely manage your used needles while away.
Temperature Control and Storage
Keeping your medication at the right temperature is vital for GLP-1 medications (such as Wegovy and Mounjaro). If you are travelling with an unopened Wegovy pen, it must be kept at fridge temperature (between 2°C and 8°C). To achieve this while on the move, use a specialised medical cooling bag with an ice pack. However, you must be extremely careful: do not let the pen directly touch the ice pack, as freezing the liquid will ruin the active ingredients. If the liquid freezes, it is no longer safe to use and must be discarded.
The good news is that once you have started using a Wegovy pen, it no longer needs to be kept in the fridge. An opened Wegovy pen can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) and out of direct sunlight for up to 6 weeks. If you are using Mounjaro, the opened pen can be kept at room temperature for up to 21 days. This makes managing your weekly doses much simpler once you arrive at your holiday destination.
Managing Your Skin and Hair While Using Wegovy on Holiday
When you experience rapid weight loss, whether due to lifestyle changes or clinical treatments for obesity, your body undergoes significant physical transformations. Two areas that are frequently affected but often overlooked are your skin and your hair. Understanding how these changes interact with holiday environments—such as high UV exposure, salt water, and chlorine—will help you protect them effectively.
Protecting Your Skin Abroad
Rapid weight loss can cause the fat pads beneath your facial skin and cheeks to shrink, which sometimes leaves the skin looking looser or more lined. When you go abroad, high levels of UV radiation can accelerate the breakdown of collagen in skin that is already adjusting to these structural changes. This can lead to a tired appearance and a longer skin recovery time.
To support your skin, stick to a simple, gentle three-step skincare routine focusing on healthy living principles:
- Gentle Cleansing: Avoid deep-cleansing or highly abrasive scrubs while away, as your skin is already more sensitive. A simple, soothing cleanser is best.
- Deep Moisturising: Use products containing hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. For an aftersun treat, look for soothing ingredients like aloe vera to aid recovery.
- Broad-Spectrum Sun Protection: High-quality SPF is your absolute priority. Pack plenty of a sunscreen your skin already tolerates well, ideally SPF30 or higher.
A golden rule for skincare while travelling is to avoid introducing any new cosmetic products. Your skin is more vulnerable during rapid weight loss, and trying a new cream or serum while away could trigger an unwanted allergic reaction or irritation.
Safeguarding Your Hair
It is not uncommon to experience temporary hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium, during rapid weight loss. While this process is entirely reversible, it does mean your hair and scalp can become much thinner and more fragile. When you expose your hair to strong holiday sunshine, salt water, or swimming pool chlorine, it can become brittle and prone to breaking.
To protect your hair, always wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your scalp from harsh UV rays. After swimming in the sea or a pool, rinse your hair immediately with fresh water to remove chlorine and salt. You can also apply natural oils, such as coconut, olive, or argan oil, to act as a protective moisture barrier and keep your hair hydrated.
Hydration and Nutrition: Staying Healthy with Wegovy on Holiday
While Wegovy and other GLP-1 medications do not directly make your skin more sensitive to the sun, they do have a unique effect on your body’s signals. Specifically, some people find these medications reduce their awareness of thirst, and side effects such as nausea can also reduce fluid intake. This means you might not realise you are becoming dehydrated, which can have a severe impact on your skin—the largest organ in your body.
To maintain your general health and keep your skin hydrated, make a conscious effort to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. You can also boost your hydration through your diet. Fresh holiday foods like cucumbers (which are 90% water) and watermelon (70% to 80% water) are delicious, low-calorie ways to keep your fluid levels up while travelling.
Eating the Rainbow for Essential Nutrients
Because you are eating smaller portions on Wegovy, you need to ensure that the food you do consume is highly nutrient-dense. Nutritional deficiencies in iron, zinc, and key vitamins can exacerbate hair thinning and affect your overall vitality. Aim to “eat the rainbow” by choosing a wide variety of colourful, whole foods:
- Iron: Essential for hair growth. Opt for animal-based sources like lean meat, poultry, and fish for faster absorption. If you follow a vegetarian diet, focus on lentils and chickpeas, and pair them with vitamin C to enhance absorption.
- Zinc: Supports tissue repair and hair strength. Pumpkin seeds and eggs are excellent, travel-friendly sources of zinc.
- Vitamin D: Vital for overall cellular health. Enjoy oily fish or fortified cereals to keep your levels topped up.
- Vitamin B: Choose whole-grain breads and brown rice to support healthy cellular metabolism.
Key Symptoms to Watch Out For
While enjoying your holiday, it is important to stay mindful of how your body is feeling. If you notice an unusual skin rash or spots developing, this could indicate an allergic reaction, which is sometimes triggered when combining your GLP-1 medication (such as Wegovy) with other travel medicines. Carrying a reliable antihistamine in your travel first-aid kit is always a sensible precaution.
Furthermore, if you begin to experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or mild nausea, do not ignore these signs. They are classic symptoms of dehydration. If this happens, take a break from the sun, rest in a cool, shaded area, and slowly sip plenty of fresh water. Giving your body time to rest should help you recover, but if symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice promptly.
