    Description

Loperamide 2mg Capsules 30 Pack (Brand May Vary)

Loperamide 2mg Capsules are an effective treatment for acute diarrhoea in adults and children over 12 years of age. This antimotility medicine works by slowing down bowel movements, allowing your body more time to absorb water and salts from your bowel contents. This helps to reduce the frequency of loose stools and provides relief from the discomfort of acute diarrhoea. Each pack contains 30 capsules, providing convenient treatment when you need it most.

    How It Works

Loperamide hydrochloride is an antimotility agent that works by binding to opioid receptors in the gut wall. This action slows down the movement of the intestines, which allows more time for water and electrolytes to be absorbed from the bowel contents. By reducing gut motility and increasing water absorption, loperamide helps to form more solid stools and reduces the frequency of bowel movements, providing effective relief from acute diarrhoea.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children over 12 years: Take 2 capsules initially, followed by 1 capsule after each loose stool. Do not take more than 8 capsules in 24 hours. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, or if you develop a fever, stop taking the medicine and consult a healthcare professional. Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not exceed the stated dose.

Children under 12 years: Do not give to children under 12 years of age.

    Active Ingredients

Each capsule contains 2mg of loperamide hydrochloride as the active ingredient.

    Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, loperamide can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects may include constipation, wind, dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Less common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and skin rash. If you experience any severe side effects or if side effects persist, stop taking the medicine and consult your pharmacist or doctor.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take loperamide if you are allergic to loperamide hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients. Do not use if you have severe diarrhoea with fever or blood in your stools, or if you have inflammatory bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis. This medicine should not be given to children under 12 years of age. Do not use if you have severe liver problems or if diarrhoea is the main symptom of pseudomembranous colitis associated with antibiotic use.

    Interactions

Loperamide may interact with other medicines. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements. Particular care should be taken if you are taking medicines that can affect heart rhythm, certain antibiotics, antifungal medicines, or medicines for HIV. Your PillSorted pharmacist can advise you about potential interactions and ensure this medicine is suitable for you.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your PillSorted pharmacist before taking this medicine. While loperamide can be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, it should only be used under medical supervision. Small amounts may pass into breast milk, so seek advice from your PillSorted pharmacist before use while breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking loperamide as it may increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness. Alcohol can also worsen dehydration associated with diarrhoea, so it’s best avoided during treatment.

    Driving and Operating Machinery

Loperamide may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or tiredness in some people. If you experience these effects, do not drive or operate machinery until you feel alert again. These effects may be more likely when you first start taking the medicine or if you take higher doses.

    Storage

Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging. Do not store in the bathroom or near heat sources.

    Important Information

All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious but most of the time they are not. Do not be alarmed by the list of possible side effects. You may not experience any of them. Ask your PillSorted pharmacist to answer any questions you may have.

If any of the following happen, stop taking the medicine and tell your pharmacist immediately or go to the Accident and Emergency department at your nearest hospital:

These are very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious allergic reaction to the medicine. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
