This oral solution contains cetirizine hydrochloride, an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever, allergic rhinitis, hives (urticaria), reactions to insect bites and stings, and some food allergies. It is suitable for children aged 6 years and over, and is ideal for those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

How It Works

Cetirizine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes symptoms such as itching, sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes. By blocking histamine, cetirizine helps to reduce and relieve these symptoms. It is considered a second-generation antihistamine, meaning it is less likely to cause drowsiness than older antihistamines.

Directions for Use

This solution should be measured carefully using the measuring device provided. Doses are as follows:

• Adults and children aged 12 years and over: 10ml (10mg) once daily
• Children aged 6 to 11 years: 5ml (5mg) twice daily, or 10ml (10mg) once daily as directed

Possible Side Effects

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• You have been advised by a doctor to avoid this type of medicine

Interactions

Cetirizine may interact with certain medicines, including sedatives, sleeping tablets, anti-anxiety medicines, and other antihistamines, which may increase the risk of drowsiness. Theophylline (used for breathing conditions) may also slightly affect how cetirizine works. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking cetirizine. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of cetirizine, making you feel more drowsy or less alert than usual. This is especially important if you plan to drive or operate machinery.

Although cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine and less likely to cause drowsiness than older antihistamines, some people may still feel drowsy or less alert after taking it. Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, refer to the patient information leaflet for guidance on how long the solution can be kept. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
