    Description

    Dioctyl 100mg Capsules – 100 Pack

Dioctyl 100mg Capsules contain docusate sodium (also known as dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate), a gentle laxative used to relieve constipation in adults and children aged 12 and over. They can also be helpful for people who need to avoid straining on the toilet, such as those with haemorrhoids (piles), or who require bowel preparation before an abdominal X-ray.

    How It Works

Docusate sodium is a stool softener. It works by allowing water and fats to penetrate the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Unlike stimulant laxatives, it does not cause the bowel to contract — it simply makes bowel movements more comfortable and less strained.

    Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: Take 1–3 capsules (100mg–300mg) daily in divided doses. The capsules should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It may take 1–3 days before a full effect is noticed. Do not exceed 500mg per day unless directed by a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

    Active Ingredients

    • Docusate sodium 100mg per capsule

    Possible Side Effects

    • Stomach cramps or abdominal discomfort
    • Nausea
    • Diarrhoea
    • Throat irritation (if capsule is chewed or opened)
    • Skin rash (rare)

If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking this medicine and seek medical advice immediately.

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

    • Children under 12 years of age
    • People with a known allergy to docusate sodium or any other ingredient in the capsules
    • People with nausea, vomiting, or unexplained abdominal pain
    • People with a bowel obstruction or intestinal blockage
    • Those currently taking mineral oil (liquid paraffin) laxatives

    Interactions

Docusate sodium may increase the absorption of certain other medicines taken at the same time, potentially increasing the risk of side effects. In particular, it should not be taken alongside mineral oil laxatives, as it may increase the absorption of mineral oil into the body. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The safety of docusate sodium during pregnancy has not been fully established, and it is generally recommended to avoid use during the first trimester unless advised by a doctor. Small amounts of docusate sodium may pass into breast milk, so use with caution while breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

    Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between docusate sodium and alcohol. However, alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may worsen constipation, so it is sensible to limit alcohol intake while being treated for constipation.
