Description
Lactulose 3.3g/5ml Oral Solution – 300ml
Lactulose Oral Solution is an osmotic laxative used to relieve constipation. It is also used in the management of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition where the liver is unable to remove toxins from the blood.
⸻
How It Works
Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it draws water into the bowel, softening the stool and making it easier to pass. It may take 24 to 48 hours before it has an effect, so do not take extra doses if you do not notice an immediate result.
⸻
Directions for Use
The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 14 and over is 15ml twice daily, which can be adjusted to 10–25ml twice daily once the desired effect is achieved. The solution can be taken neat or diluted with water or fruit juice. For children under 14, refer to the patient information leaflet for age-appropriate dosing guidance. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure about the correct dose, speak to your PillSorted pharmacist.

• People who are intolerant to galactose or fructose, or have lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
⸻
Interactions
Lactulose has few known significant drug interactions. However, if you are taking neomycin or other antibiotics, this may affect how well lactulose works, particularly when used for hepatic encephalopathy. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
⸻
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Lactulose is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it is not significantly absorbed into the bloodstream. However, it is important to seek advice before starting any new medicine. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
⸻
Alcohol
There is no known significant interaction between lactulose and alcohol. However, drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet will help lactulose work more effectively, and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to dehydration and worsen constipation.
⸻
Driving and Operating Machinery
Lactulose does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience any unexpected effects that impair your alertness, exercise caution and seek advice.
⸻
Storage
