Gaviscon Original Liquid Aniseed is an antacid and reflux suppressant used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastric reflux. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over, and comes in a pleasant aniseed flavour.

How It Works

When you swallow Gaviscon Original Liquid, the sodium alginate reacts with the acid in your stomach to form a thick, gel-like raft that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid from travelling back up into the oesophagus (food pipe) and causing the burning sensation associated with heartburn and reflux. The potassium bicarbonate helps to neutralise excess stomach acid, providing additional relief.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 10–20 ml (2–4 x 5 ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. The medicine should be taken after meals and at bedtime for best effect. Do not exceed 4 doses in 24 hours. Gaviscon Original Liquid is not recommended for children under 12 years unless directed by a doctor. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Original Liquid is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects are uncommon but may include:
• Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or hives
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (seek immediate medical attention)
• Nausea or stomach discomfort
• Increased bloating or wind

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

• People with a known allergy to sodium alginate, potassium bicarbonate, or any other ingredient in this product
• Children under 12 years of age (unless prescribed by a doctor)
• People who have been advised to follow a low-sodium or low-potassium diet — this product contains sodium and potassium, and your doctor should be consulted
• People with kidney disease or impaired kidney function should seek medical advice before use

Interactions

Gaviscon Original Liquid may affect the absorption of some other medicines if taken at the same time. You should leave at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other medicines, particularly antibiotics (such as tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, thyroid medicines, and certain heart medications. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Original Liquid is commonly used to relieve heartburn and reflux during pregnancy, and is generally considered appropriate for use. However, because this product contains sodium and potassium, it is important to use it at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time necessary. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Original Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the lining of the stomach and oesophagus, and may worsen the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux. It is advisable to limit alcohol intake if you suffer from these conditions.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Original Liquid does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue normal activities while taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, use within the period indicated on the packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
